Description

Students are required to undertake a period of work placement in a relevant Company/Organisation at the end of 3rd Year. This module aims to prepare students for this work placement. Guest speakers are invited to address the class on a regular basis on a range of current topics.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Identify their preferred career choice(s) and indicate the modules and skills that may be potentially beneficial in achieving such a role.

2.

Prepare a CV and cover letter, specific to the role being applied for.

3.

Identify the key stages of the recruitment and selection process and demonstrate appropriate interview skills.

4.

Understand the performance and behaviour appropriate to the contemporary workplace.

5.

Discuss the employment and other opportunities that are available in their chosen field.

Module Assessment Strategies

The students are assessed on the basis of their performance and communications from the Work Placement element of the Module as well as their level of knowledge as assessed by an end of term examination set and marked by members of the environmental science department staff on a variety of topical environmental issues which is internally and externally moderated.

Indicative Syllabus

  1. Work placement, minimum 12 weeks duration
  2. Maintenance of daily diary for the duration of the work placement
  3. Presentation of work experience
  4. Participation in peer review of work placement of fellow students
  5. Attendance at presentations  given by visiting experts and former graduates
  6. Attendance on 1-2 three day field trips to industries / plants (e.g. incinerators) of environmental interest
  7. Self directed learning to accrue knowledge in regard to environmental topics currently being discussed by the government, experts and the general public.
