Description

This module will introduce the learner to the world of the professional civil engineer. It provides the learner with the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills gained throughout the programme in an appropriate work-place setting. Students on this programme may be placed with civil engineering consultants, contractors, local authorities etc. While on work placement learners will be required to participate in a range of engineering projects and contribute significantly to the various project activities and outputs. The objective of the work placement is to foster the following key skills; interpersonal skills, problem-solving skills, teamwork, practical skills, self-confidence and self-reliance, commercial awareness and maturity.

Where it is not possible to secure a work placement for a learner, an alternative of an industry related project will be available addressing the same learning outcomes.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Apply knowledge and practical skills gained through the academic programme to the practice of civil engineering

2.

Work and contribute effectively as part of an engineering team

3.

Develop and enhance communication and interpersonal skills through working as part of a team

4.

Produce a reflective journal on a weekly basis outlining the learning and experience gained during the work placement

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module offers the opportunity for students to put into practice skills gained through their studies. Learning is primarily on the job with help and support from industry supervisor and work colleagues.

Module Assessment Strategies

The learner will prepare a reflective journal/activity log and submit to the academic supervisor every week. This will consist of a report or list of daily activities /experiences.  This log should be uploaded to the Work Placement Moodle page each Monday during work placement. A copy of the log should also be emailed to the Industrial Mentor each Monday during work placement. 

The assessment is formulated using the student's activity log and the work placement report form completed by the Industrial Mentor/Company.

Repeat Assessments

This module is marked as pass/fail. A fail grade will require the learner to re-attend and repeat the work placement module.
