Description
Students are required to undertake a period of work placement in a relevant Company/Organisation at the end of 3rd Year. This module aims to prepare students for this work placement. Guest speakers are also invited to address the class on a regular basis on a range of current topics.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
1.
Identify their preferred career choice(s) and indicate the modules and skills that may be potentially beneficial in achieving such a role.
2.
Prepare a CV and cover letter, specific to the role being applied for.
3.
Identify the key stages of the recruitment and selection process and demonstrate appropriate interview skills.
4.
Understand the performance and behaviour appropriate to the contemporary workplace.
5.
Discuss the employment and other opportunities that are available in their chosen field.
Teaching and Learning Strategies
This module will be delivered fulltime. This will include lectures and group work augmented by independent learning and directed learning. This approach is expected to address student learning needs. Moodle will be used as a repository of educational resources and as a means of assessment (e.g. quizzes, uploading assignments and journals).
Module Assessment Strategies
This module is 100% Continuous Assessment.
- Professional Placement Profile (20%) - research and prepare a Placement Profile indicating their Placement preferences. This Profile will be used to secure Work Placement.
- Preparation of CV & Cover letter (30%) - guidance provided and feedback given in order to improve.
- Mock interview (20%) - to prepare the student for the actual work placement interview.
- Report (30%) - identifying future opportunities in the area, referencing information from guest speakers and students own research.

- Overview of the work placement process.
- Introduction to job search skills and career search platforms.
- Preparation of placement profile identifying career preferences, skills, strengths, weaknesses and up skill opportunities.
- Guest speakers from external organisations and previous placement students will provide information on their roles/experience.
Prepare a CV and cover letter, specific to the role being applied for.
- CV layout and the key information to include.
- Cover letter preparation.
Identify the key stages of the recruitment and selection process and demonstrate appropriate interview skills.

- Interview preparation and interview types (formal, informal, competency based interviews).
