TOX07001 2019 Environmental Toxicology
This teaching unit will introduce students to the principles underpinning environmental toxicology and to some practical components of common toxicology bioassays.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Describing the principles of environmental toxicology
Outlining the major toxicants of environmental interest
Describing the use of bioassays in environmental toxicology
Performing and reporting on toxicological laboratory experiments
Teaching and Learning Strategies
This module will be delivered fulltime. This will include lectures and laboratory practicals, which will be augmented by independent learning and directed learning. This approach is expected to address student learning needs. Moodle will be used as a repository of educational resources.
Module Assessment Strategies
The module will be assessed using a combination of end of semester final exam (40%), continuous class assessment and reporting of laboratory-based work (60%). The continuous class assessment will involve two-three theory assessments incorporating a series of short questions. Practical work will be assessed via written scientific reports.
Repeat Assessments
Repeat Continuous Assessment and/or Final Exam.
Indicative Syllabus
- Principles & concepts (dose response, uptake, mode of action, toxicity tests)
- Fate of environmental toxicants (transport, transformation, bioaccumulation, degradation)
- Review of major environmental toxicants (organic pollutants, heavy metals, inorganic gaseous and aquatic pollutants, radionucleides)
- Ecological effects of toxicants (population effects, community effects, case studies)
- Laboratory practicals (a selection of common microbial, plant and invertebrate based bioassays will be demonstrated)

Understand the essential principles of toxicology and how poisons affect the human body with this accessible and engaging summary General Principles of Toxicology Disposition of Toxicants Nonorgan-directed Toxicity Target Organ Toxicity Toxic Agents Environmental Toxicology Applications of Toxicology Casarett & Doulls Essentials of Toxicology is an easy-to-absorb distillation of the major principles and concepts that were presented in depth in Casarett & Doulls Toxicology: The Basic Science of Poisons, Eighth Edition, the fields gold-standard text. Presented in full color, the book concisely describes the science of toxicology, and includes important concepts from anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry to facilitate the understanding of the principles and mechanisms of toxicant action on specific organ systems. A summary of key points at the beginning and review questions at the end of each chapter help you study, understand, and memorize the material. Reflecting the expertise of more than sixty renowned contributors, Casarett & Doulls Essentials of Toxicology is logically divided into seven sections: Succinct and comprehensive, there is no better text for gaining an understanding of essential principles, toxicokinetics, how toxic effects are passed on to succeeding generations, how each body system responds to poisons, and the specific effects of a wide range of toxic agents than Casarett & Doulls Essentials of Toxicology.
