Description

This module will develop a critical understanding of strategic policy development and planning approaches for tourism and event management organisations. It will advance capacities for strategic thinking and problem-solving within the industry including DMC's (Destination Management Companies), and the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) sectors. Strategic policy development and planning for tourism and event management is critically explored, which is underpinned by environmental, economic, and socio-cultural sustainability values encompassing relevant stakeholder consensus.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

Critically evaluate the strategic tourism and event planning and policy development process

2.

Align the different contexts of tourism policy formation and the tourism planning process strategically, from an organisation's perspective

3.

Critically evaluate an organisation's capacity for tourism planning and policy formation through the lens of sustainable development

4.

Implement capacities of knowledge, skills, practices, and strategic thinking for planning and policy for tourism and events

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Students will learn through a blend of theoretical and applied knowledge generation utilising current theories, concepts, and principles of strategic tourism planning and policy through online classes and workshops which encompass a research-informed approach.

Students will also engage in self-directed learning through engagement in appropriate reading material, industry reports, strategies, plans and policies. An emphasis will be placed on asynchronous learning techniques through the process of evaluation, critique, and development of appropriate videos, journal articles, and organisational plans and policies.

 

Students will engage either in-person or remotely, in a workshop learning activity twice per semester. This will involve visits to module appropriate destination or event to engage in sustainable tourism or event management activities.

Module Assessment Strategies

Assessment 1: Strategic planning presentation (40%)

Utilising a report style, students will critically assess existing tourism organisational policy in the context of sustainable development. Students will be required to appraise tourism destination or event organisational policy in its approach to sustainable development. Students will also present the findings of the report.

 

Assessment 2: Strategic Plan for an organisation (60%)

Students will develop strategic plans and policies for an organisation utilising strategic thinking capacities obtained in the module while achieving sustainable development.

Examine theories and practices of tourism planning and policy

Assess current tourism planning and policy concepts

Scrutinise and reflect upon the economic, environmental, and socio-cultural factors that have contributed to the need for strategic tourism and event planning and policy

Demonstrate an understanding of the need to monitor and measure tourism and event impacts

Analyse strategic tourism planning and policy approaches from an international, national, and local level

Appreciate the importance of stakeholder consensus in tourism and events planning and policy approaches

Appraise impact assessment approaches and their relationship with tourism planning and policy

Evaluate processes, tools, and frameworks to monitor tourism policy and planning
