Description

The aim of this module is to support each student to plan, manage and complete a research proposal, and literature review on a selected topic. This module is to support each student to complete a research output on a selected topic. The module consists of ongoing individual support provided by the lecturer. Students will produce an independent research proposal, research plan, outline research method, sampling framework and literature review involving the application of skills and knowledge over the whole programme. This research project is seen as an opportunity to consolidate the studies and learning achieved to date on the overall programme. Some minor preparation for this subject will be undertaken during the module on Business Tourism Research Methods. The Student will research and develop a theoretical framework to support their research. The topic selected, should be refined and written up as research proposal after approval from the research team/supervisor and dept. ethics committee the proposal will be written into the introduction chapter. The literature review will then be fully investigated and completed within this module.

The module consists of ongoing individual and group tutorial support. Each student will also be supported to plan, manage and develop a proposal/introduction chapter for her/his work and be expected to write up a completed literature review on the completion of this module. Each individual student will complete the piece of work and must attend and present at peer reviewed workshops if necessary. Students are expected to show critical thinking, understanding of how knowledge is generated and used, follow ethical guidelines and be able to work independently.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Review current literature in chosen topic area in order to construct a relevant research question showing an awareness of current tourism and events management

2.

Critically identify, evaluate and synthesise research related theoretical frameworks and existent literatures 

3.

Write a research proposal incorporating ethics approval related to their chosen research topic and refine this into the introduction chapter of the research project

4.

Coordinate, plan and manage their research project incorporating a proposal with research plan, methods, sampling framework and ethis approval

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Students will be required to demonstrate their research knowledge and competency through assessments of academic research and demonstrate the ability to evaluate research knowledge and competency through assessments of academic research and write-up (i.e. research proposal and associated literature review)

This module is largely self directed learning which is supervised by a research supervisor who will meet the student on a regular basis . As this module is at level 8 the allocated time per student is 30 min per week from the supervisor. The student is graded for student tutor mark which factors in the following components personal initiatives:

Professional autonomy and accountability while Planning their research process, managing the  ethics approval , Keeping appointment dates, Meeting agreed deadlines, Initiative, Student planning approach, Creativity.

 

Module Assessment Strategies

Research Proposal

Students will be required to develop professional autonomy and accountability in the process of preparing a proposal, research plan, methods, sampling framework and ethics approval. This should be refined and written up as an annotated bibliography and research proposal within the introduction chapter

 

 

Literature Review

Demonstrate ability to critically identify, evaluate and synthesise research related theoretical frameworks and existent literatures in writing a detailed literature review on the chosen topic.

 

Management of research                 

Demonstrate they have developed and applied skills of inquiry relevant to the resolution of their design project

good project management demonstrated in research plan, time keeping and regular meetings with research team and peers.

Repeat Assessments

Two options depending on level of work completed during term time with supervisor.

Indicative Syllabus
