Description

This module is designed to provide the students with the key concepts and issues of importance in assessing and managing the impacts of tourism. It aims to develop the student's capacities to asses the impacts of tourism and provide students with the key concepts and philosophies of sustainable tourism as a tool to manage these impacts. It explains the foundations of sustainable tourism internationally and in Ireland. It develops a critical awareness of economies, marketing, certification and management of sustainable tourism.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

Examine the economic impacts of tourism

2.

Examine the environmental impacts of tourism

3.

Examine the social impacts of tourism

4.

Discuss strategies to manage the impacts of tourism

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Students research and evaluate the impacts of tourism based on the key principles of tourism management.

Students examine the role of significant tourism stakeholders in selected case study examples.

Students assess the role of tourism planning and mitagation  in creating tourism destinations and suggest how such roles could be expanded.

Module Assessment Strategies

Students will work in groups to write a report and present an outline of the impacts of tourism on a set location within the region.

Students will complete a report containing strategies with can be utilised to manage the impacts of tourism for a set location

Explain the current influences on tourism growth development and associated impacts 

Examine the social, physical and economic  factors that have contributed to the need for varying theoretical perspectives on tourism impacts 

Discuss the implication of the economic impacts of tourism for the management of the tourism industry. 

 Identify the symbiotic relationship between tourism and the environment 

Explain environmental impact assessment, approach and models 

Discuss environmental policies and impact control measures 

Examine the tourist host relationship and theoretical perspectives for measuring social change

Identify the need for continual assessment and monitoring of impacts
