Description

This subject is designed to provide students with an overview and appreciation of Guiding as a tourism activity &  take a look at the adventure tourism sector and its place as a strategic component of the tourism industry in Ireland & Internationally .

 

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Explain the concept of guiding tourism and the characteristics of the adventure tourism industry.

2.

  Examine how to put together a tour and guide a group of tourists

3.

Examine Virtual adventure tourism technologies & destinations

4.

Discuss the future development of adventure tourism

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The subject involves a blended approach of practical and theory through lecture based teaching  theory and also a practical element through field trips to visit and engage with Adventure tourism products available in Ireland.

This subject can also be delivered virtually through use of online platforms allowing virtual access to tourism attractions/lifestyle entrepreneurs.

The students are assessed on their  delivery & showcasing of a guided tour. The the management of a group of clients at a location off campus is assessed in terms of the delivery of the tour to the clients on the day. This tour can be delivered virtually.

Practical Evaluation Tour Guiding project  ( can be real life or virtual) x 50%

Practical Evaluation Field Trips/online participation through virtual tours  x 20  %

1.      Introduction, definition and development of tour guiding/ adventure tourism                       10%

•·             Define tour guiding/adventure tourism and describe its categories and characteristics(1)

•·             Examine the nature and concept of tour guiding & the adventure tourism sector (1,2)

•·             Identify the factors which have contributed to the growth of adventure tourism(2)

 

2.      The adventure tourism Product                                                              20%

•·       Describe the role and provision of Adventure Tourism facilities(1,4)

•·       Identify current influences, trends and developments in the adventure tourism industry(3,4)

•·       Describe the role of adventure tourism in the areas of outdoor education, adventure therapy and corporate team building (1,3,4)

•·       Recognise the role of expeditions within the adventure tourism industry and the significance of effective expedition planning (1,3,4)

  • Recognise the growing rise in virtual adventure tourism and guiding applications/platforms used to provide these services

 

3.      Structure and administration                                                                              15%

•·       Describe government and non government organisations involvement in the development and administration of adventure tourism        (3,4)

•·       Identify the role of  the public, private and voluntary sectors in the provision of adventure tourism (3,4,6)
