Description

The aim of this module is to prepare students to communicate and operate effectively in a professional business environment from an office or working from a home environment. Students will develop writing strategies to enable them to respond to a variety of communication scenarios, including complaint handling. They will study the mechanics of Business English, report writing and other writing strategies.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

 Appreciate the principles of effective communication.

2.

Develop time management skills including an understanding of working from home

3.

Practice effective business correspondence: including dealing with customer complaints and preparing reports.

4.

Demonstrate reading comprehension and text analysis skills including complex factual texts and specialised articles.

5.

Appreciate the skills required to write an academic report.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be taught through blended delivery, using on-line lectures supported by asynchronous learning activities and workshops. Teaching is focused on skills-based practice. Students will simulate business practice supported by theory and case-studies. 

Module Assessment Strategies

This module will be assessed by ongoing assignments. Students will be required to submit a portfolio of practical work, research and write up a report and complete a Moodle quiz.

Repeat Assessments

The repeat assessment will be a resubmission of the continuous assessment.

  • Mechanics of English including grammar, syntax and punctuation.
  • Common errors in the usage of English.

  • Finding and evaluating sources,
  • Plagiarism and referencing conventions,
  • Academic writing styles and report structure.
  • Presenting analysis using visual communication tools.
  • Designing a poster presentation
