Description

The learner will gain an understanding of how to use surveying equipment to carry out topographical surveys and set out construction works. The learner will also learn how to use BIM compatible 3D software to produce site plans and sections and carry out computations for land conveyancing and construction planning purposes.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Understand and carryout fundamental surveying calculations.

2.

Carry out topographical surveys and use BIM compatible 3D software to produce site plans.

3.

Control the set out of buildings horizontally and vertically using standard surveying equipment.

4.

Carry out grading analysis, earthwork volumes analysis, longitudinal and cross sections for construction projects.

5.

Read and produce basic Mass Haul diagrams

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered using a combination of live lectures and blended learning techniques. This will include frontloaded online recorded tutorials, augmented by independent learning and directed learning. This approach is expected to address student-learning needs. A learning platform such as Moodle will be used to upload educational material (i.e. tutorial recordings plus supplementary reading material) and as a means of assessment (e.g. uploading
assignments and projects). This blended approach (lectures and pre-recorded tutorials) allows students work at their own pace.

Module Assessment Strategies

  1. Mid term summative and formative assessment. 
  2. Major summative project.
  3. Summative Final exam. Final exam are compulsory pass.

 

Repeat Assessments

Repeat submission of outstanding CA or Project work for Autumn Exam boards and repeat Final exam in Autumn repeat exam session.

Indicative Syllabus

  1. Fundamental calculations, converting areas, applying scale, calculating gradient, and reading maps and plans.
  2. Tape-work; basic principles of ensuring accuracy when using tapes to carry out surveys and set out construction works, correct use of field books, equipment, procedures, recognition and correction of errors, use of site profiles.
  3. Levelling; types and parts of instrument, setting up and reading the staff, booking and reducing the levels, recognition and minimising errors, flying and series levelling, vertical control setting out using the level, contour survey procedures.
  4. Total stations; types, basic principles of EDM, pulsed and phased systems, factors effecting accuracy, instrument features, applications, recording survey data and setting out. Introduction to laser scanning.
  5. Use of BIM compatible 3D software to process survey data and produce topographical site plans, produce profiles and sections, carry out grading volumes analysis, design and volumes analyse road corridors.
  6. GPS; Principles of GPS and using the instruments for topographical surveys, Satellite systems used in GPS The principle of measuring distance to fix position by GPS, Sources of error and how to minimise them, static and kinematic GPS, Coordinate systems used.
  7. Production of sections including longitudinal sections profiling ground/road and services and cross sections.
  8. Areas and Volume calculations: Simpson's Rule, Trapezoidal Rule, formulae for calculation cross sectional areas, volumes calculation using end areas and prizmoidal formulae, site clearance volume calculations. Inserting raster images in CAD software for area calculations.
  9. Setting out: primary and secondary stations, local control, TBM's, grids, building setting out techniques, trench set out techniques for sewers and drains, road and embankment set out techniques
  10. Mass haul diagrams; terminology, production of and use for controlling and cost calculating of earth movements on site.
