Description

The learner will gain an understanding of how to use basic surveying equipment to carry out topographical surveys and set out works. The learner will also know how to produce a site survey plans, site layout plans and sectional drawings for construction projects. Also covered are computations of area and volumes for sites and earthworks.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

apply fundamental surveying calculations, read plans and scale off drawings.

2.

operate an automatic level to carry out levelling surveys and control vertical in building set out.

3.

produce a topographical site survey plan using a total station and 3D BIM compatible software

4.

produce sectional profile drawings of ground using drafting software.

5.

calculate areas and volumes of sites and construction project earthworks.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered using a combination of weekly lectures and practicals, and blended learning techniques. This approach is expected to address student-learning needs. A learning platform such as Moodle will be used to upload educational material (i.e. tutorial recordings plus supplementary reading material) and as a means of assessment (e.g. uploading assignments and projects). The blended approach (lectures and pre-recorded tutorials) allows students work at their own pace.

Module Assessment Strategies

  • Mid term summative and formative assessment.
  • Continuous practical and project work.
  • Summative Final exam.

Repeat Assessments

Re-submission of practical and project work for Autumn exam board and repeat final exam in Autumn repeat exams.

Module Dependencies

Prerequisites

Indicative Syllabus

  1. Surveying fundamentals of reading maps and plans, scaling off drawings, calculating gradients, converting plan and ground areas.
  2. Tape work - procedures for accurate site surveys using tapes and eliminating errors.
  3. Contours - Calculating gradients, drawing ground profiles, contour surveys, interpolating positions of contours from spot heights and spot heights from contours.
  4. Levelling - carrying out levelling surveys and calculating levels using HPC and rise and fall methods, two peg tests, setting out levels
  5. Introduction to Total Stations - EDM, errors, procedures for carrying out a survey using the instrument and eliminating errors
  6. Introduction to Civil 3D - importing survey data, creating site survey plan. creating a ground profile.
  7. Reading and drawing of ground profile drawings, longitudinal and cross sections for drainage and roads.
  8. Calculations for Area and volume of sites and construction project earthworks - using CAD, Simpsons or Trapezoidal rules, Cross sectional area calculations, End of Areas for volume, site levelling earthworks volumes.

Required Reading
2003-01-01 Construction Surveying and Layout Ingram
ISBN 096474211X ISBN-13 9780964742116

This text is intended for those who are learning or performing surveying field measurement and layout processes. It is suitable for technical and college-level courses in construction sciences, building construction, and civil engineering, and is recommended as a reference for contractors, construction management, engineering, architectural, and design-build firms. With an emphasis on eliminating mistakes and reducing errors, many companies use this text as their field surveying training manual, or provide it to layout personnel for self-study and personal improvement of field and calculation techniques. Anyone who is involved in construction should have this as a resource available for its common-sense approach to surveying and layout activities.
