STRU08004 2019 Structural Design 401H
This module requires the learner to identify and formulate design concepts and evaluate traditional and sustainable construction options for the refurbishment of existing buildings and/or the design of new buildings.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Analyse and design reinforced concrete framed structures.
Analyse and design reinforced concrete slabs, columns, cantilever retaining walls and pilecaps.
Select an appropriate structural form, defend design decisions and present findings both orally and in written form.
Survey, analyse and design new buildings and/or the refurbishment of existing buildings.
Collaborate with others in the development of solutions to design problems
Teaching and Learning Strategies
This module will be delivered to full-time learners through a mix of formal lectures and design practical classes.
This module will be delivered to part-time online learners through a mix of live online lectures and online tutorials. The lectures and tutorials will be recorded and made available to the learners through an online virtual learning environment.
To reinforce the theoretical principles covered in lectures, learners will participate in design practicals and project work.
Module Assessment Strategies
This module is 100% continuous assessment as it is a practical subject.
The continuous assessment is based on group project work and calculations, sketches, reports, drawings, presentations and interviews that will be assessed on an ongoing basis to provide both formative and summative assessment to the learner.
The project work is interdisciplinary and linked with Structural Design 402H and Geotechnical Engineering 402H in semester 2.
Both individual and team performance will be assessed at different stages during this project work with an emphasis on teamwork.
Peer assessment will be incorporated into marks awarded for all practical work. The sizing of the slice method of group assessment (Clelford & Hopkins, 2014) will be used to allocate marks to the individual members of the project group. A copy of this method of allocating marks will be given to the students at the start of the module.

Repeat Assessments
The learner must pass all elements of the continuous assessment.
Where a learner or group of learners fail the project element of the module they will be required to resubmit the project or an alternative project for assessment or a repeat exam paper at the repeat examination session.

Structural scheme design may include the following:
- Factors to be considered in selecting the form, type and stability of structures.
- Comparative design.
- Sustainable development requirements including the role of sustainability in the selection of structural systems and life-cycle assessments.
- Structural failures.
Structural renovation of existing buildings may include the following:
- Introduction.
- Historical aspects of construction.
- Approach to structural renovation.
- Structural actions on existing buildings.
- Structural elements of existing buildings.
Reinforced concrete design may include the following:
- Analysis of multi-storey buildings: Stability. Frames supporting vertical and lateral loads. Shear walls. Wind loading. Analysis of continuous beams and frames and the redistribution of moments.
- Design of vertical and horizontal ties
- Slabs: Simply supported and continuous two-way spanning, ribbed, waffle and flat slabs.
- Columns: Design of slender columns. Design of columns in biaxial bending.
- Reinforced Concrete Cantilever Retaining Walls.
- Design of pile caps
Design project(s) and practical work are designed to supplement the fundamental principles covered in lectures.
