Description

This elective module aims to provide progression from Fundamentals of Aquatics module to provide training in the area of lifesaving and swim teaching.  Students have the opportunity to gain two industry recognised qualifications.

Students will cover basic lifesaving training: It will include demonstration of effective rescue strokes, land and water based rescues, CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation) & first aid. Theory inc: the principles of accident prevention, casualty identification, principles of rescue, spinal cord injury management (SCIM), CPR and first aid. Students who meet the external body attendance requirements and standards will receive the Royal Lifesaving Society Emergency Response Swimming Pool Certification.

Students will train as Assistant Swimming Teachers working with primary school children of various swim abilities to teach swimming stokes and skills. Students who meet the external body attendance and standard requirements will be eligible for assessment and certification for the Water Safety Ireland Level 1 Assistant Swim Teacher award.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

Demonstrate effective rescue strokes and practice skills necessary for pool based lifesaving.

2.

Effectively demonstrate practical CPR & first aid techniques as per RLSS Emergency Response swimming pool syllabus.

3.

Explain pool safety theory including the principles of accident prevention, casualty identification, principles of rescue, spinal cord injury management (SCIM), cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid.

4.

Demonstrate knowledge skill and competence to safely deliver a 30 minute swim teaching session covering varied swimming strokes and skills to primary school children of varied swim abilities in an aquatic environment.

5.

Describe the fundamentals of swimming, class management and follow code of ethics and child protection measures appropriate for Level 1 Assistant swim teachers.

  • Flipped classroom - recorded lectures on theoretical aspects of swim teacher syllabus to aid completion of logbook

  • Independent learning - completion of worksheets and log book

Module Assessment Strategies

  • An attendance requirement is set at 75%.  It is possible to pass continuous assessment and not achieve external accreditation.
  • Active participation in practical class assessments throughout the semester
  • Complete practical pool lifesaving, practical CPR, practical First Aid and oral theory questions assessment as per RLSS Emergency Response (swimming pool) requirements.
  • Completion of WSI Assistant Swim teacher log book.
  • Demonstrate effective practical swim teaching session.

Repeat Assessments

If students fail all continuous assessment they will be required to take part in a practical assessment and submit a written project.

If students fail part of continuous assessment they will be required to submit written project or take part in practical examination.

Students undertaking repeat assessments will be marked out of a maximum of 40%.

If a student has not actively participated in the module throughout the semester they will have to repeat attend the module.

Indicative Syllabus

Lifesaving section: LO 1,2 & 3

  • Pool Safety Theory: To include the principles of accident prevention, casualty identification, principles of rescue, spinal cord injury management (SCIM), cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and first aid.
  • Practical Life Support: Adult, child and infant basic life support to include the use of a pocket mask as a barrier method of resuscitation. Two person CPR. CPR for a casualty with suspected spinal injury.
  • Practical emergency first aid: Choking, bleeding, broken bones, bites, burns, stings, shock, heart attack, epilepsy, asthma and diabetes.
  • Practical rescue skills: pool rescue skills – land based and water based rescues, unconscious casualty recovery, SCIM and incident management (for developing rescue skills within simulated emergency conditions).

Assistant Swim Teacher section: LO 4 & 5

  • Define the role of the Swimming Teacher. Outline class management principles including organising groups. Discuss the fundamentals of swimming.
  • Discuss teaching methods of teaching including breakdown of the four competitive strokes and outline teaching drills and skills for all swimming abilities.
  • Review methods of communication.
  • Complete stroke analysis and compile lesson plans and evaluate lessons.
  • Review code of ethics and child protection measures.
  • Perform practical teaching classes to swimmers of varying abilities.
