Description

The module aims to increase the students understanding of the theory and practice of skills development. Students will gain an understanding of the place skills development plays in improving levels of motor ability. The place that skills development plays in long term motor development is also explored. Students will get hands on experience in practice and assessment techniques and will examine the development of appropriate fundamental skills applicable to motor development. Practical experience is a large focus of the module. Students will have the opportunity to deliver skills orientated classes, using games, dance and movement.  Learning to deliver goal focused lessons which reflect school based physical education scenarios is a key component of the module.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Describe the place of play in learning, with reference to seminal theory in the area

2.

Explain the place fundamental movement skill acquisition plays in motor skill development

3.

Show a knowledge of sport opportunities available to students with disabilities.

4.

Create a variety of game and dance activities and show their application in physical education.

5.

Design game and dance lesson plans aimed at developing related fundamental movement skills.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Fundamental concepts are introduced and illustrated through lectures. The understanding of students is tested and further enhanced through student centred learning exercises and interactive tutorial sessions. Students practice teaching fundamental movement skills in real life scenarios which may include, local schools and community groups. The application of theory to practice is facilitated through both teaching and practical based field experience. Within the module's theory and practical components a blended method of delivery is an option when suitable.

Module Assessment Strategies

  • Logbook: The logbook allows for the student to capture their lesson plans and learning in one centralised location. This material can be used as a resource for teaching and coaching future clients. This material also provides a bank of evidence of work completed and can therefore be used when applying to complete future studies. This logbook will also capture the students own research which is relevant to the topic of play, dance and movement skills.
  • Micro Teaching: This form of assessment will allow for the student to demonstrate their teaching and coaching ability. The student will design, manage and run a safe and effective skills based practical session in an indoors environment.

Required & Recommended Book List

Required Reading
2016-11-07 Elemental Play and Outdoor Learning
ISBN 1138960713 ISBN-13 9781138960718

Providing a fresh approach to examining development in the early years, this book draws together well-established ideas and theories based on outdoor play experiences and connects them to spiritual development in children. Elemental Play and Outdoor Learning considers socio-cultural perspectives, guided participation and mediated learning alongside playfulness as it looks at young children s developing interest in the people around them, the environment they experience and the ideas and objects that involve them. Including rich encounters with young children and adults, chapters cover: elemental play as an approach to observe and support children s holistic development; the role of people in developing effective exploratory and social skills; using the concept of elemental play to consider the spiritual system as an aspect of child development; imaginative play with raw, natural materials and how prepared environments can encourage children s natural exploration; an exploration of well-established constructs of play and how elemental play can be integrated or re-conceptualised with the other theories. Exploring current thinking about natural experiences, interest in forest school activity and fresh insight into dynamic ecological concepts, this book will be essential reading for practitioners and students on undergraduate and postgraduate early years and childhood studies courses. Considering the role of the learning environment, the practitioner, the wider community, and policy, chapters are divided into four key sections which reflect major influences on practice and pedagogy: Being alongside children Those who educate Embedding families and communities Working with systems Offering in-depth discussion of diverse perceptions, potentials and practicalities of early childhood play, this text will enhance understanding, support self-directed learning, and provoke and transform thinking at both graduate and postgraduate levels, particularly in the field of early childhood education and care, for students, educators, integrated service providers and policy makers.

Many of us are drawn to dance because we love the act of dancing. Teaching was something that came later. It is necessary to teach dance if we want to continue dancing and make a living doing it. Whether you are facing a class of students for the first time or are an experienced teacher, whether you teach children or adults, whether in a recreational setting or college, you will find this book an essential source of information. Supported by illustrations, numerous examples, sample lesson plans, activity suggestions, and discussion questions, Teaching Dance: The Spectrum of Styles is designed for use as a course textbook for student teachers and as a resource for the professional teacher. It includes practical tips and application suggestions with additional material downloadable from the website. Supported by illustrations, numerous examples, sample lesson plans, activity suggestions and discussion questions, Teaching Dance: The Spectrum of Styles is designed for use as a course textbook for student teachers and as a resource for the professional teacher. It includes practical tips and application suggestions with additional material downloadable from the website. This groundbreaking work brings the Spectrum of Teaching Styles originally developed by Muska Mosston and Sara Ashworth to the art and science of dance. The Spectrum will help dance teachers address many issues, including the following: For the beginning teacher, "Did I meet my objectives? How can I judge how well I did?" For the advanced teacher, "How can I encourage initiative and help students become more responsible and self-motivated?" "How can I continue to grow and improve as a teacher?" For the college or university teacher, "How do I help my colleagues in other disciplines and my administration understand dance as an academic discipline?" "How can I engage students cognitively and encourage critical thinking?" For teachers of children, "How can I focus on the creative possibilities of movement for each child and harness their love of discovery?" For teachers in private studios, "The students in my class are at several different levels! How can I coax the beginners and still challenge the more advanced students?" "How can I teach so that I reach every student, keep students coming back for more classes, and thus keep enrollment (and my business) up?" When teaching large classes, "How can I provide individualized feedback for every student in the class and still keep the class moving?"

ISBN 1032238763 ISBN-13 9781032238760

Setting a common international agenda for physical education, this book asks how physical education and physical education teacher education can be reconfigured together so that they are responsive to changes in today's fast-paced, diverse and uncertain global society. It argues that only a revolutionary move away from national policy silos can reinvigorate physical education and lead to improved, equitable outcomes for children and youth, and both novice and veteran teachers. Drawing on developing success stories in diverse places, this book emphasizes three important strategies: international-comparative analyses, which facilitate cross-border knowledge generation, innovation, professional learning and continuous improvement; solid, dynamic partnerships between teacher education programmes and exemplary school physical education programmes; and knowledge-generating teams consisting of exemplary teachers and teacher educators. Each chapter provides viable alternatives and rationales framed by unique national and local contexts. Significantly, these chapters announce that the work that lies ahead - and starts now - is a collective action project. It necessitates collaborative research and development among policy leaders, researchers, teacher education specialists, physical education teachers and, in some cases, school-age students. This is essential reading for all researchers with an interest in physical education or teacher education, and an invaluable source of new perspectives for physical education students, pre-service and in-service teachers, and educational administrators and policymakers.
