SPOR06030 2022 Introduction to Sport and Recreation
This subject aims to provide a basic understanding of sport and recreation sector in the context of local, national and international developments.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
define, classify and describe the different forms of sport, recreation and leisure activity
explain the structure and make up of the Irish sport and recreation industry
recognise and discuss the role of the Irish government and associated Statutory Agencies in the development of national sport and recreation policy and strategies
explain the role of the principle associations and professional agencies involved in the development and delivery of sport and recreation programmes in Ireland at national and local level
recognise the contemporary issues influencing sport and recreation today
appreciate the role of research in the Irish sport and recreation sector

Repeat Assessments
Students must achieve an overall grade of 40% to pass module. If a student has failed overall, they will be required to repeat the specific elements that they have failed. (i.e. Final exam and/or the specific piece of continuous assessment failed)

1 Defining and Categorising Sport, Recreation and Leisure 5%
Define the concepts and give examples of the following: Sport (sport for all, competitive, elite); Recreation (active and passive); Leisure (as a concept, organized leisure)
Describe the categorization of sporting and physical activity
2 Government and Sport in Ireland 30%
Describe the organization and governance of sport in Ireland
Sport Ireland
Describe the role of the Sport Ireland as a statutory agency in the development and delivery of sport in Ireland.
Explain the programmes of the Sport Ireland in the delivery of its strategy (participation, performance, excellence)
Explain the relationship and support which the Sport Ireland gives to its strategic partners (i.e. CI, SII, NGB's, LSP's, Sport Campus Ireland, IOC etc.) in the delivery of sport in Ireland
Explain the Sport Ireland Anti-Doping programme
