SOC06020 2022 Visualising Sociology
Visual Sociology is concerned with the ways in which visual materials can be used to illuminate societal processes and issues. This is realised in two ways: Firstly through the study and production of images as a means of making sense of social reality and of cultural representation; and secondly through employing a range of visual methods in social research. This module introduces techniques such as collage, mapping, photography and digital storytelling for expanding the sociological imagination, exploring and responding to material from other year 1 Sociology modules, as well as making links to students’ own experiences. It further provides opportunities for practical experimentation with visual and creative methods that may be applied in future social research.
