Description

This module is designed to support student’s personal development of professional skills in the workplace including the student's ability to independently apply the knowledge, skills, and competences they have acquired in the course, in the completion of a substantive Level 8 project. Through engaging in an enriching workplace-based project, students will expand their work practice knowledge, skills, and competencies relevant to the programme and workplace, reflected in their coursework and assessment.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Independently plan and manage activities to deliver a quality project according to agreed deadlines with minimum supervision.

2.

Interpret data and/or literature findings in relation to a defined project-related question, objective, or hypothesis.

3.

Communicate project outcomes displaying competent scholarly/technical writing and referencing according to standard conventions.

4.

Deliver a structured presentation on the project and key outcomes in the appropriate format and provide a defence of the project and key future directions of the work.

5.

Relate project work undertaken to ongoing work of the company and industry more generally and discuss the contribution/impact of the project in the context of company objectives.

6.

Articulate how the project has contributed to personal and professional development and skills enhancement.

7.

Reflect on performance enhancement and demonstrate ability to undertake self-appraisal and identify and partake in professional/career development activities.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Students will participate in authentic and relevant workplace-based learning including undertaking a project involving independent, self-directed study, consistent with Level 8 learning. Each student will be expected to engage regularly with a Project Supervisor who will provide appropriate individual guidance and review. The student will keep a detailed structured journal/portfolio with evidence of consciously reflecting work practice and their workplace-based project which will be presented as a project report with a presentation and oral defence. Self-directed learning and planning are expected, where gaps in knowledge, abilities, and/or competency are identified. Students will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to continuing professional development (CPD) including a situational audit of skills and expertise, with the additional expectation of their proactively gaining insights into relevant workplace activities/practice that do not directly relate to their particular post, to evidence a wider understanding of the workplace and company/employer objectives.

Module Assessment Strategies

Students are advised to keep comprehensive records of daily activities in an appropriate format including reflection to complete the project and work practice dimensions of this module which is assessed as 100% Continuous Assessment and comprises the following two core related elements:

(1) Project

  • Project Planning and Management with the Project Supervisor (including timely delivery of project milestones).
  • Written Project Report.
  • Student Project Presentation with oral defence.

(2) Work Practice

  • Structured Reflective Journal/Portfolio (N.B. Must Pass Assessment Element; Pass Mark 50%).
  • Assessment by Academic Supervisor.

 

 

Repeat Assessments

The repeat assessment will require resubmission of continuous assessment work.

Indicative Syllabus

This module comprises two core related elements:

(1) Project:

  • Independently plan and manage activities to deliver a quality project according to agreed deadlines with minimum supervision.
    • Critical evaluation of the most appropriate methodology/techniques.
    • Agreement of project scope and milestones between student and Project Supervisor.
    • Breakdown and schedule of resources and activities to meet defined project goals and objectives.
    • Questions to be addressed by the investigation and how methodologies underpin the implementation plan.
  • Interpret data and/or literature findings in relation to a defined project-related question, objective, or hypothesis.
    • Critical interpretation of data using statistical techniques and/or established interpretive frameworks encouraged in order to validate interpretations and conclusions drawn.
  • Communicate project outcomes displaying competent scholarly writing and referencing according to standard conventions.
    • Mentorship on writing, data representation, editing, and referencing is provided on an ongoing basis by Project Supervisor.
  • Deliver a presentation on the project and key outcomes in the form of a structured presentation in the appropriate format and provide a defence of the project and key future directions of the work.

(2) Work Practice

  • Relate project work undertaken to ongoing work of the company and industry more generally and discuss the contribution/impact of the project in the context of company objectives.
  • Articulate how the project has contributed to personal and professional development and skills enhancement.
  • Reflect on performance enhancement and demonstrate ability to undertake self-appraisal and identify and partake in professional/career development activities.
