Description

This module will look at the need for effective project management in occupational safety and health.  The role of the leader along with the development of personal and professional skills will be explored to assist the practitioner of occupational safety and health in a professional environment. 

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Appraise current and historical management theories and their relevance to the modern workplace

2.

Analyse the stages in effective project management with particular reference to occupational safety and health activities

3.

Explore the roles adopted by team members in a functional project management group and reflect on ones own skills and attributes in the context of project management 

4.

Identify the barriers to effective project management and develop strategies to minimise their influence

5.

Consider the wide variety of resources available to the safety practitioner in the management of a project

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered part-time.  This module will be delivered using blended learning techniques.  This will include online lectures (via adobe connect or similar), workshops and may include site visits, augmented by independent learning and directed learning.  This approach is expected to address student-learning needs.  Moodle will be used as a repository of educational resources and as a means of assessment (e.g. quizzes, uploading assignments and journals).  The online delivery will be blended with workshops to bring the learners together to facilitate group learning.

Module Assessment Strategies

This module is 100% Continuous Assessment

Students will work on a portfolio of assessment working towards the development of a project plan to include some/all of the following elements:

  • Mind mapping 
  • Project work identification using a real workplace as a reference tool if possible (Workplace identified by the student)
  • Programme of works schedule putting particular emphasis on key dates in the project
  • Resource identification and allocation
  • Reflection on the project as a whole and on individual performance

Indicative Syllabus

1. Appraise current and historical management theories and their relevance to the modern workplace

The evolution of management from FW Taylor to modern management theories/theorists and how they influence us as managers

Appraise and select the beneficial elements from different theories with reference to practitioner based activities

2. Analyse the stages in effective project management with particular reference to occupational safety and health activities

Project definition, scope and function.  

Identifying key stakeholders and resources available. 

Planning the project and identifying the critical path tasks 

Planning and decision making within the project

Monitoring progress and staying in control of the project

Project closure

3. Explore the role of the leader and other stakeholders who influence the success of a project

Compare and contrast the role of the leader and the role of a manager

Identify team members roles in a project and how best to select key personnel

Managing personnel in the project team 

Identify external stakeholders and their influence on a project. 

Reflection as a core skill of the project leader

4. Consider the barriers to effective project management and develop strategies to minimise their influence

Discuss what barriers might be presented

External and internal influences on the project and how best to manage these

Handling issues to do with opposition

Managing change and opposition to change. 

5. Consider the wide variety of resources available to the safety practitioner in the management of a project

Identify what ICT packages are available to the safety officer for assistance in Project Management 

Review some of the outputs of these ICT packages with a view to determining suitability
