Description

The theme of this Enquiry Based Learning module is Workplacement and Reporting Occupational Safety and Health Data.  The aims of this module is to provide an opportunity for students to work in groups integrating and applying technical health and safety knowledge to develop and defend managerial type solutions to simulated OSH problems.  Students are expected to reflect on their work placement experiences and draw on the skills and the knowledge gained. 

 

 

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.
Integrate knowledge, principles, theories and legislation pertaining to OSH.
2.

Devise OSH interventions to manage risk, incorporating business implications.

3.

Collaboratively defend findings on the resolution of complex OSH problems.

4.

Communicate to a variety of audiences on OSH and reflect on the learning experience.

5.
Participate constructively in an OSH role in a workplace environment.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered fulltime.   EBL is a facilitated learning approach where students engage in workplaced based scenarios and construct their own learning, identifying gaps in their knowledge and undertaking research to bridge the learning gaps.  Facilitators guide students through their learning journey assisting them in the maintenance of a healthy team environment as well as guiding on subject matter.  This is carried out in a structured environment where the integrity of the teaching is maintained and a safe learning environment protected at all times.  This approach is expected to address student learning needs. Moodle will be used as a repository of educational resources and as a means of assessment.

Module Assessment Strategies

This module is 100% Continuous Assessment.

The students must have a 70% attendance rate in order to meet the collaborative learning requirements of this module.

Formative feedback on individual and group performance will be given during each scenario and summative feedback will be given over the course of the semester.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will draw on the technical knowledge acquired over the semester in Project Management, Regulatory Affairs, EHS Managment Systems, Behavioural Based Safety and Ergonomics.  

Knowledge and skills acquired from their work placement will help them adapt to the complex and interdisciplinary scenarios in this module. 

Communication, self reflection and peer reflection will play an integral part of this module.

Self motivational skills and project management skills will be developed.
