Description

This subject introduces the learner to the design of a Safety Management System for construction sites and construction related activity. The learner is introduced to the core principles of Risk Management and Risk Reduction for a broad range of construction activity on site, from inception to completion.

 

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the sources of safety law, relevant to the construction industry.

2.

Explain the legal responsibilities that exist between duty holders, those who control a work place and those that use them.

3.

Illustrate an understanding that the thrust of legislation has been to highlight the responsibility of employers to manage health and safety in the workplace.

4.

Recognise that the impact of the Safety Health and Welfare at Work Act, 2005 is that employers must adopt a structured management approach and a safety management system that will deliver compliance.

5.

Specify the steps and safety interventions that are required for the successful implementation of a safety management system.

The teaching strategy uses a blended approach of lectures & self-directed learning.

The assessment strategy incorporates continuous assessment   & a written final   examination.

  1. Safety Policy design which sets the scene for the delivery of a successful management system.
  2. The role, obligations and responsibilities of the employer.
  3. Principles of control.
  4. The nature and scope of a safety management system.
  5. Implementation of the safety management system.
  6. Safety Interventions that will impact successful outcomes for continual improvement of the safety record.
