SAFE07031 2019 Occupational Hygiene Chemical Agents
The aim of this module is to provide the student with the knowledge required to assess chemical contaminants in workplace air, so that scientific data can be used to evaluate the workplace environment.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Identify workplace hazards of a chemical nature.
Utilise knowledge of essential facts, major concepts and underlying principles in relation to occupational hygiene.
Construct and appraise suitable monitoring strategies and approaches for chemical contaminants.
Select suitable methodologies for the monitoring of air quality and complete associated calculations for a range of chemical sampling methods.
Evaluate occupational air sampling data and advise on suitable control measures for the prevention of exposure to chemical agents in the workplace.
Teaching and Learning Strategies
This module will be delivered part-time.
This module will be delivered using blended learning techniques.
This will include online lectures (via adobe connect or similar), workshops and may include site visits, augmented by independent learning and directed learning.
This approach is expected to address student-learning needs.
Moodle or an equivalent will be used as a repository of educational resources and as a means of assessment (e.g. quizzes, uploading assignments and journals).
The online delivery will be blended with workshops to bring the learners together to facilitate group learning.
Module Assessment Strategies
This module is 50% Continuous Assessment and 50% Final Exam
2 x Moodle Quizzes (MCQ's) (10%): shall take place (towards the middle and end of semester)
Workshop Assignment (10%): Students work in groups to develop solutions to prescribed workplace H&S issues through enquiry based learning.
Individual research report assignment (30%): Examining & discussing the links between human & organisational factors during accident causation and will be submitted via Moodle towards the end of the semester.
Final exam (50%) at end of term.
Repeat Assessments
Repeat assignments will be available on Moodle, subject to IT Sligo Procedure on late submissions, Application for extension of continuous assessment deadline.
Indicative Syllabus
Occupational air pollutant categories. The hazards of exposure to airborne pollutants.
Air sampling programmes, active, passive, personal, static. Airflow measurement. Air analysis, dusts, toxic gases, flammable gases.
Monitoring strategies, initial assessment, preliminary survey, routine survey. Air sampling pumps, categories and calibration.
Occupational air sample collection devices, passive, filters, particle counters, solid adsorbent, desorption, breakthrough, indicator tubes/papers, bubblers/impingers, sampling bags, microbial media, HSE/NIOSH/OSHA standards and protocols.
Determination of acceptable levels of contaminants in the atmosphere.
The use of occupational air monitoring data.
Sources and characteristics of airborne particles pollutants in the workplace.
Operation of hierarchy of controls; Personal protective equipment: selection, fitting, maintenance, education/training, causes of failure. Respirators, breathing apparatus.
Ventilation systems: local extraction ventilation, hoods, total enclosure, booths, receptors, capture. Ducting and fans. Air cleaning devices. Design criteria, balance, capture velocities, transport, flow measurement.
