Description

This module deals with the fundamental principles of construction methods, materials and technology.  The hazards associated with construction are explored and effective solutions and controls discussed. This module develops a student's ability to take part in a multi-disciplinary construction team.  The challenges facing OSH professionals in the industry will be addressed along with the development of solutions.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

Describe construction activities and establish safe work practices through hazard identification and risk assessment. 

2.

Develop professional competencies with reference to practitioner based activities.

3.

Consider key personnel in the construction industry and how their relationships influence the safety of a project

4.

Discuss the challenges that the construction industry poses to the safety professional

5.

Communicate the importance and relevance of safety in the construction environment to a range of audiences.

6.

Interpret training requirements involved in the construction process.

7.

Review relevant safety legislation showing its application in the daily running of a construction project

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered part-time.This module will be delivered using blended learning techniques.This will include online lectures (via adobe connect or similar), workshops and may include site visits, augmented by independent learning and directed learning.This approach is expected to address student-learning needs.Moodle will be used as a repository of educational resources and as a means of assessment (e.g. quizzes, uploading assignments and journals).The online delivery will be blended with workshops to bring the learners together to facilitate group learning.

Module Assessment Strategies

This module is 50% Continuous Assessment and 50% Final exam

Formative assessment will be delivered through class discussions and individual feedback.  Students will be assessed through an individual project a topic relevant to the construction industry e.g. hazards, communication issues, training needs.  MCQ at the end of the module will cover all content delivered through the module.

Repeat Continuous Assessment and/or Final Exam at next available sitting 

Indicative Syllabus

Describe construction activities and establish safe work practices through hazard identification and risk assessment. 

Site Set up and preparation

Excavations and Foundation construction 

Superstructure and Roof work

Landscaping and project handover to client

Develop professional competencies with reference to practitioner based activities

Discuss the role of safety in a construction project.  Develop a written document in line with industry expectations and explore writing skills necessary for a practitioner of safety.  Safety meetings will be discussed and how effective planning and participation can be beneficial to the site as a whole. 

Consider key personnel in the construction industry and how their relationships influence the safety of a project

Discuss the roles of the Client, Project Supervisor for the Design Process, Construction Supervisor for the Construction Stage, Site construction Team, Site management team and external stakeholders.  Relationship between Contractor & Sub-contractors will be looked at.  Special emphasis will be put on the requirement for cooperation and communication

Discuss the challenges that the construction industry poses to the safety professional

The nature of the work, the legal framework, the changing work environment, the cultures and norms of the industry and how safety professionals can have a positive influence though their work.

Communicate the importance and relevance of safety in the construction environment to a range of audiences.

Effective communication strategies and how they can can positively influence the management of safety in the construction industry. 

Interpret training requirements involved in the construction process.

From management to site based staff, discuss the need for training from a legal requirement perspective as well as from a best practice perspective.  Special emphasis on the need for SafePass training.
