Description

This module aims to build learners knowledge and understanding of the theory and practice of communication skills relating to the field of Occupational Safety & Health.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Demonstrate knowledge of interpersonal skills in listening, questioning, assertiveness and, verbal and non-verbal communication in a health and safety context.

2.

Develop short technical oral presentations.

3.

Represent technical and /or scientific information in a manner that facilitates ease of communication.

4.

Paraphrase and summarise written technical information, reference sources and write a bibliography.

5.

Assess own communications skills and keep a personal learning journal.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered part-time.

It will be delivered using blended learning techniques and this will include online lectures, workshop activity and augmented by independent learning and directed learning.

This approach is expected to address student-learning needs.

Moodle will be used as a repository of educational resources and as a means of assessment (e.g. quizzes, uploading assignments and journals).

 

Module Assessment Strategies

This module is 100% Continuous Assessment. 

All marks are individual marks.

On-going assessments:  30% Moodle Quizzes (MCQ).  Learning Journal - may include reading, directed activities, group discussions &  individual reflections. (25%):

Workshop Assignment (15%): Students work in groups to develop solutions to prescribed workplace H&S issues through enquiry based learning.

Individual research report assignment (30%): Students will produce a structured report on a specified and current topic and will be submitted via Moodle towards the end of the semester.
