SAFE06039 2019 Introductory Science for Occupational Safety and Health 1
This module is designed to introduce human biology to the learner in a way that connects it directly with health and disease. The student will identify the basic physiology of the human body; cells, organs, systems and their functions. Particular focus will be on the systems most likely affected by occupational health hazards. Students will be able to link fundamental biological concepts to cases of occupational disease.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Identify basic cell structure and function of plant, animal and bacterial cells.
Identify basic functions of the Respiratory and Circulatory Systems.
Recognise basic functions of the Digestive and Urinary Systems
Recognise and outline the basic functions of the Skleletal and Muscular Systems
Identify the basic functions of the Nervous systems and the Endocrine system.
Explain the structure and function of the ear and skin
Recognise the main routes of entry into the body of a range of occupational health hazards and their interactions within the human systems.
Teaching and Learning Strategies
This module will be delivered part-time online. This will include lectures augmented by independent learning and directed learning.
This approach is expected to address student learning needs.
Moodle will be used as a repository of educational resources and as a means of assessment (e.g. quizzes, uploading assignments). The online delivery will be blended with workshops to bring the learners together to facilitate group learning.
Module Assessment Strategies
This module is 50% Continuous Assessment and 50% Final Exam
For Continuous Assessment there will be four MCQs given during the semester

Indicative Syllabus
A summary of the topics which may be covered are identified below
- Brief overview of cell structure of animals and bacteria. Transport of molecules across the mamalian cell membrane
Only the key features of human organs and organ systems within the body will be outlined
- Circulatory System: Key features of how the blood delivers oxygen and nutrients around the body, Heart, blood, blood vessels and lymphatics
- Respiratory System; Key features of how the body supplys oxygen to the blood through the nose, larynx, trachea, diaphram, bronchi and lungs
- Digestive System; How the body digests food and allows the body to convert this food into energy. Focus on the mouth, stomach and intestines.
- Nervous System; How the brain uses information it receives from stimuli to coordinate actions and reactions, via the spinal cord and nerves.
- Endocrine System; How the endocrine system regulates and controls a number of body functions by the secretion of chemicals from glands into the blood stream.
- Muscular and Skeletal Syetems, How these systems of bones, cartilage, joints and muscles support, protect and allow for movement in the body.
- Urinary Systems; How the body filters out excess fluid and other substances from the bloodstream through the urine via the kidneys and bladder.
- The skins function in acting as a barrier to protect the body against disease, regulate body temperature and retain body fluids.
- The structure and function of the human ear for hearing and balance.
- Identify some common occupational health hazards that effect the various systems mainly through Inhalation, Ingestion, Absorbtion and Innoculation.
