SAFE06037 2019 Introductory Science for Occupational Safety and Health 2
This module introduces students of Occupational Safety & Health to essential principles and concepts of Chemistry and Physics.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Describe the basic composition of matter and atomic structure and explain chemical bonding
List the properties of chemicals commonly found in the workplace and explain the importance of these properties and their intrinsic hazards
Undertake basic scientific calculations and solve numerical problems
Select and apply an appropriate mathematical formula to solve a physical problem
Describe physical properties of noise vibration, radiation, electricity, heat and temperature
Explain the physical laws and definitions of waves, sound, energy, electricity, light and nuclear physics
Select and apply mathematical problem solving skills in chemistry in the workplace
Explain chemical laws and definitions in the field of chemistry.
Teaching and Learning Strategies
The students will be exposed to a blend of learning activities e.g. on-line lectures (via Adobe Connect), independent learning and directed learning. This approach is expected to address various student learning needs. Moodle will be used to upload educational material (e.g. powerpoint presentations, recordings of on-line lectures and supplementary reading material) and as a means of assessment (e.g. quizzes, uploading assignments and journals).
The online delivery will be blended with workshops to bring learners together to facilitate group learning.
Module Assessment Strategies
Final theory : 50% Continuous assessment: 50%
Regular MCQs will be undertaken through Moodle, and assignment uploads through Moodle.
Repeat Assessments
Repeat assignments will be available on Moodle, subject to IT Sligo Procedure on late submissions, 'Application for extension of continuous assessment deadlines'.
