SAFE06028 2019 Occupational Hygiene Physical Agents
This is an introductory unit to the occupational hygiene area with the aim of equipping students with theoretical and practical knowledge of various occupational hygiene theory and techniques. The topics covered include the basis of occupational hygiene hazards in the work environment; occupational health; workplace exposure standards; sources of information as related to the physical hazards in the work environment; noise and vibration; lighting; thermal environment and pressure; radiation (ionising and non-ionising); controls for workplace health hazards.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Identify, describe and apply the fundamental scientific concepts and principles of occupational hygiene, occupational hygiene hazard classification and recognition and workplace exposure standards.
Measure, calculate, and evaluate occupational exposures to various hazards.
Explain and evaluate systematic approaches to assessing and controlling physical occupational hygiene hazards in the workplace.
Describe the underlying concepts and principles of relevant instrumentation and to operate selected instrumentation.
Collect, analyse and interpret virtual workplace data in a systematic way in order to assess a range of physical occupational hygiene hazards.
Teaching and Learning Strategies
This module will be delivered full-time.
This will include lectures and practicals, augmented by independent learning and directed learning.
This approach is expected to address student learning needs.
Moodle may be used as a repository of educational resources and as a means of assessment (e.g. quizzes, uploading assignments and journals).
Module Assessment Strategies
This module is 40% Continuous Assessment and 60% Final Exam .
Practicals (25%) will be assessed throughout half of the Semester. Feedback using formative assessment will be ongoing via class discussions.
An individual theory CA (15%) will take place mid semester.
Final exam (60%) wil take place at the end of term.
Repeat Assessments
TBA as per examination board decisions.
