Description

This Module introduces students to descriptive statistics, probability and some probability distributions (Normal and Binomial). These topics will be introduced in the context of health and safety. An appropriate computing software package (E.g. EXCEL, SPSS, MINITAB, JMP, StatCrunch and R are popular statistical packages) will be introduced to perform statistical analysis.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Use correct terminology/vocabulary to discuss findings of statistical methods

2.

Apply descriptive (numerical and graphical) statistics to present simple summaries of data

3.

Collate data and use an appropriate computing software to perform descriptive statistics on data set in a coherent scientific manner

4.

Apply probability and some probability distributions (Normal and Binomial) to data analysis

5.

Communicate statistical data individually and in teams in an appropriate format

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The teaching methods used will be a combination of lectures, self-study, labs, tutorials, problem-solving exercises and computer-based learning supported by online VLE based (Moodle) notes, videos & quizzes.

Module Assessment Strategies

This module will be assessed by means of

1. short CA tests (MCQ), approximately every three weeks and a written CA assessment at the end of the module

2. computer laboratory-based assessment with an appropriate statistical software package

3. assignments which will be completed during the students independent learning

4. final examination

Repeat Assessments

Where the module mark is below 40% and attendance is below the 75% requirement, the student must repeat attend the module.

Where the deficit is only in the module mark, the student will be asked to repeat exams or resubmit practical assignments for re-evaluation.

For courses in introductory statistics. The Art and Science of Learning from Data Statistics: The Art and Science of Learning from Data, Fourth Edition, takes a conceptual approach, helping students understand what statistics is about and learning the right questions to ask when analyzing data, rather than just memorizing procedures. This book takes the ideas that have turned statistics into a central science in modern life and makes them accessible, without compromising the necessary rigor. Students will enjoy reading this book, and will stay engaged with its wide variety of real-world data in the examples and exercises. The authors believe that it's important for students to learn and analyze both quantitative and categorical data. As a result, the text pays greater attention to the analysis of proportions than many other introductory statistics texts. Concepts are introduced first with categorical data, and then with quantitative data. MyStatLab not included. Students, if MyStatLab is a recommended/mandatory component of the course, please ask your instructor for the correct ISBN and course ID. MyStatLab should only be purchased when required by an instructor. Instructors, contact your Pearson representative for more information. MyStatLab is an online homework, tutorial, and assessment product designed to personalize learning and improve results. With a wide range of interactive, engaging, and assignable activities, students are encouraged to actively learn and retain tough course concepts.
