Description

The objective of the dissertation/research project is to provide an independent and critical appraisal of an issue related to Social Care and Social Justice. This work can be presented in a number of different formats.

  1. Documentary Analysis: A thorough theoretical exploration of a specific issue is carried out either as an extended literature review or a systematic review.
  2. Primary Research: Carry out an independent piece of research.
  3. Case study: A single in-depth case study is undertaken using innovative methodologies and methods to examine the single case in sufficient detail.
  4. Select a project from a set of supervisor led topics, carried out using one of the previous mentioned formats.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Demonstrate skills to assess the effectiveness of any research approach identified.

2.

Critically evaluate the extant literature on selected topic.

3.

Demonstrate a range of standard and specialised research or equivalent tools and techniques of enquiry.

4.

Integrate research ethics into all aspects of the research project.

5.

Produce a research project in a format appropriate to level 9 award.

6.

Disseminate the findings of the research through an appropriate platform.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Students will avail of one to one supervision with a designated supervisor. This will involve 1-to 1, one hour meetings. Attendance and participation in this supervision is a key requirement of this project.

Module Assessment Strategies

This research project will be assessed via written submission and Viva.

Written submission will be 20,000 words approximately and must adhere to the Institute's Research Ethics Policy and Procedures.

Repeat Assessments

Repeat requirements will be decided at exam boards but will be most likely consist of both oral and written submission. Any repeat submission is capped at 40%.

Indicative Syllabus

Demonstrate skills to assess the effectiveness of any research approach identified.

Students will demonstrate and defend why they have chosen a particular topic, research process and format.

Evaluate the extant literature on a selected topic.

Students are expected to critically review key literature and relevant to the field and informs the topic undertaken. They are expected to demonstrate forms of knowledge and how different knowledge can influence the format of information presented e.g. policy document, legislative document, and peer review publication, whilst not ignoring the importance of different sources to a research area. They are expected to present and assess literature which clearly demonstrates increased knowledge and expertise in their fields, and where appropriate informs the development of further stages of empirical work.

Demonstrate a range of standard and specialised research or equivalent tools and techniques of enquiry.

Methods, tools and techniques are dependent on the project, but must demonstrate a clear relevancy to the research chosen. Students must be able to justify these decisions as the best fit for their research project.

Produce a research project in a format appropriate to Level 9 award.

Students completed work will demonstrate the knowledge, skills and competency that are required for a Level 9 award.

Argue the validity of the process and research undertaken.

A via voce will be undertaken by the student, allowing them to present and defend their work to examiners. Students must demonstrate a thorough understanding of all aspects of their research project which allows questions to be answered accurately and fluently and the discussion to be extended with confidence into familiar and unfamiliar areas.

Dissemination of findings.

The research process and output will be presented by students at a public forum for those working in the social care field eg: seminar.

2022-01-23 Emancipatory and Participatory Research for Emerging Educational Researchers Routledge
ISBN 9781000521689 ISBN-13 1000521680

Emancipatory and Participatory Research for Emerging Educational Researchers is a concise fundamental guide on two related models of education researchemancipatory and participatory. In addition to providing an introduction to these research models, this book also studies them through the lens of critical practice as well as pure research and provides case studies as examples. It highlights a variety of data collection techniques that are used in education research, from visual methods to interviews, and the strategies researchers apply to ensure the research process involves and benefits the participants. Emancipatory and Participatory Research for Emerging Educational Researchers functions as a useful "how-to" guide for first-time and less experienced researchers. Furthermore, it highlights not only how participatory research is by its nature emancipatory but also the overlaps between the two models approach to data collection.
