RSCH07009 2019 Research Methods 2
Learners will become equipped with the core skills to develop a research design/methodology proposal for their research question. They will be able to plan a research project to be conducted in the following semester, and develop an ability to summarise, integrate and identify strengths, weaknesses and limitations of scientific writing. Learners will contrast various observational epidemiological designs and identify the appropriate use of each design, while developing basic skills in the use of bibliography software.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Describe the steps in undertaking research and develop a research design/methodology proposal for their research question.
Develop and review the appropriate literature for their research proposal and submit a generic assignment to improve scientific writing.
Summarise, integrate, compare and show evidence of critical analysis of scientific papers.
Compare and contrast various observational epidemiological designs and identify the appropriate use of each design.
Use bibliography software (Endnote) to improve writing skills.
Teaching and Learning Strategies
This module will be delivered. This will include lectures, and workshops, augmented by independent learning and directed learning. This approach is expected to address student learning needs. Moodle will be used as a repository of educational resources and as a means of assessment (e.g. quizzes, uploading assignments and journals).
Module Assessment Strategies
This module is 100% Continuous Assessment.
The student will be given a multiple choice question quiz during mid-semester. They will complete a generic literature review where topic titles are given. They will develop a 'Research Proposal which will be presented in 'Powerpoint Format' where feedback is given. The student will then submit their finished 'Research Proposal' at the end of teh semester.
Repeat Assessments
Repeat Continuous Assessment.

ISBN 0815372434 ISBN-13 9780815372431
This accessible book presents a novel and accessible way to learn about designing and conducting social research. Unlike traditional social research methods books, it provides a 'real world' account of social researchers' experiences and learning achieved through conducting research in a variety of fields. It contains an eclectic collection of research and advice for conducting research from social researchers with varying backgrounds. Suggestions are made in relation to gaining access to research sites, conducting research on sensitive topics such as suicide, child sexual abuse and homelessness, ensuring the inclusive participation of participants with intellectual disabilities and children. Also included are discussions of conducting practitioner research, conducting research on individual change, psychoanalytically informed research, documentary research and post qualitative research. Other chapters focus on criticality in research on topics that have become politicised and moralised, ensuring that research conducted is credible and how knowledge in research is constructed through both the theoretical framework used and how it is conducted. Bringing together a diverse collection of social research projects, Designing and Conducting Research in Health and Social Care Settings will be of interest to students, educators and researchers in the social sciences and professionals in related areas.

The definitive work in D&I research -- now completely updated and expanded The application of scientific research to the creation of evidence-based policies is a science unto itself -- and one that is never easy. Dissemination and implementation research (D&I) is the study of how scientific advances can be implemented into everyday life, and understanding how it works has never been more important for students and professionals across the scientific, academic, and governmental communities. Dissemination and Implementation Research in Health is a practical guide to making research more consequential, a collection assembled and written by today's leading D&I researchers. Readers of this book are taught to: Evaluate the evidence base in an effective intervention Choose a strategy that produces the greatest impact Design an appropriate and effectual study Track essential outcomes Account for the barriers to uptake in communities, social service agencies, and health care facilities The challenges to moving research into practice are universal, and they're complicated by the current landscape's reliance on partnerships and multi-center research. In this light, Dissemination and Implementation Research in Health is nothing less than a roadmap to effecting change in the sciences. It will have broad utility to researchers and practitioners in epidemiology, biostatistics, behavioral science, economics, medicine, social work, psychology, and anthropology -- both today and in our slightly better future.
