Description

Learners will have the ability to describe and outline various principles of research and basic constructs in the research process.  Learners will be able to distinguish quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques.  Learners will also be introduced to basic research methodologies and equipped with the core skills to be able formulate a research proposal.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Describe and differentiate the research proposal, research process and research paper with specifc focus on health

2.

Differentiate and distinguish between qualitative and quantitative research methodologies.

3.

Plan, design and produce aspects of the research proposal

4.

Devise or evaluate basic research data collection tools both quantitative and qualitative in nature

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will adopt a student centred approach. Students will learn theory and principles of basic research methodologies in lectures. Reflection on this learning will be required through a log that students will keep throughout the semester providing an opportunity to individually evaluate or apply the topics covered. Workshops will mainly focus on group based activities providing an interactive learning experience to increase the students understanding. Assessment will take both individual and group formats, aiming to cater for different learning/assessment preferences.

Module Assessment Strategies

This module is 40% Continuous Assessment and 60% Final Exam. During the delivery of this module lecture material is supported by use of online resources, direction to relevant research methods books in the library and reflective practice. Understanding of theory will be assessed through online (with immediate feedback) and final exam while application of the knowledge will be supported and assessed through individual and group work during their workshops.

Repeat Assessments

A student may repeat all or part of the continuous assessment and/or the final exam where they have met the 75% minimum attendance at workshops.

If a student fails to meet the 75% minimum attendance, they will be recommended to repeat-attend the workshops.
