Description

Technical Report Writing teaches the participant not only the critical techniques a scientist needs to know when conducting research but also how to write about his or her work. Not only is this relevant for a dissertation and assignments but also for generating formal reports such as clinical evaluation reports. Professionals in industry require the skills to share their work with others, to communicate their learning, their discoveries and their failures, thus improving research and thus benefiting the industry as a whole and more importantly, the patient.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Diagnose poor technical writing and modify text to demonstrate use of technical writing tools for industry and academic writing

2.

Conduct and synthesise an academic literature search relevant to a proposed dissertation or topic  and demonstrate competence in the use of Harvard referencing  using software where appropriate.

3.

Present the research findings in a critically reflective manner which evaluates the research methodologies used, knowledge produced and critically reviews the ethical issues pertaining to the research

4.

Formulate and compare methods for data analysis and the presentation of results and compare different methods when presenting different results

5.

Present a comprehensive dissertation proposal 

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The educational elements will be provided by the Institute of Technology Sligo, NUI Galway and NIBRT staff. Additional lecturing, as required, may be provided by outside specialists and practitioners. Online/blended programmes are designed for students who want to study part-time at a pace that matches their work-life balance. Through a combination of blended delivery formats including online (synchronous and asynchronous) as well as other technologies we strive to reach the forefront of emerging breakthroughs in the delivery and assessment of online students.

Module Assessment Strategies

The module will be assessed on the basis of 100% continuous assessment. Some or all of the following assessment modes may apply: examinations, practical work, projects, essays, vivas, seminars, and assignments. These assessments may be organised at different centres throughout the country and a selection of assignments may be assessed.

Repeat Assessments

The programme allows students to progress to a next stage if they have failed to attain the pass mark for a particular module. A student may be allowed to carry up to 10 credits into a new stage. This policy is at the discretion of the examination board.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will introduce participants to methodology and techniques required for successful completion of their module assignments and research project. 1. This module will enable participants to understand the core concepts of good technical writing, how to write concisely and precisely for technical documents, correct syntax, grammar, how to write numbers and abbreviations etc.; how to construct a scientific document using the IMRAD method and how to draft introduction and discussions.

2. The module will direct students to effectively search scientific databases, critically appraise research and clinical publications and ethical issues / case studies and present their findings in an appropriate format using Harvard referencing style; to use referencing software. 

3. The module will enable students to utilise project planning techniques,  to identify an appropriate research question and formulate a valid hypothesis and scope,  to design their own research project and manage it in a time-dependent manner and manage their dissertation independently. The promotion of independent learning is an integral part of this syllabus. A student shall appraise and defend the structure of a well argued research proposal as part of this module. 

4. The module will develop critical thinking skills in appraisal of clinical and other research data via case studies and encourage synthesise of student's own analysis of research data.

This module will enable students to acquire the research and study skills necessary for successful completion of the MSc in Medical Technology Regulatory Affairs.
