Description

This module aims to evaluate and critically assess documentation required to describe and measure mechanical works in accordance with the Agreed Rules of Measurement in various installation scenarios.  The documentation produced will be instrumental in the subsequent financial management of mechanical works.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Evaluate the various installations and the intricacies associated with the description and measurement of each i.e. water, heating, ventilation and air conditioning etc.

2.

Formulate descriptions for and quantify the plant and equipment associated with individual installations in accordance with the ‘Agreed Rules of Measurement’

3.

Appraise and assess the requirements surrounding the measurement of pipework, ductwork and insulation in any of the chosen installations etc.

4.

Determine, measure and describe sundry items (marking, testing and commissioning, operation maintenance manuals, ‘as installed’ drawings, identification plates, keys, tools, etc.) and builder’s work required in accordance with the Agreed Rules of Measurement

5.

Formulate and assess a Bill of Quantities (or part thereof as appropriate) which will form part of the ‘Tender Package’ and subsequently the ‘Contract Package’; this document to be in compliance with all relevant contractual documentation and to be capable of being interpreted by all and any in the ‘pricing’ and financial management of a construction project.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered using blended learning techniques. This will include online lectures (via adobe connect or similar), and guest lectures augmented by independent learning and directed learning. This approach addresses student learning needs. Moodle will be used to upload educational material (i.e. presentations and recordings of online lectures plus supplementary reading material) and as a means of assessment (e.g. quizzes, uploading assignments and journals). This blended approach brings students together to facilitate group learning.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will undertake an evaluation of documentation necessary to describe and measure mechanical works in accordance with the Agreed Rules of Measurement in various installations scenarios (installations such as heating, drainage and refuse disposal, hot and cold water services, ventilation and air conditioning, space heating, fire suppression, etc. + associated builder’s work) to take account of mains supply, plant, equipment, pipework, ductwork, insulation as appropriate in order to prepare a Bill of Quantities which will identify all work in a manner recognisable to all and priceable by all for the purpose of submission of a tender figure in a competitive environment. The documentation produced will be instrumental in the subsequent financial management of the work.
