QUSU09003 2019 Mechanical Building Services Technology
Mechanical Building Services Technology will enable learners to develop critical opinions of mechanical building services technology and building systems. It will enable learners to evaluate and assess the requisite mechanical services elements, systems and components which combine to complete a variety of efficient functioning building types. This will require learners to appraise and evaluate the relationships between the CSA (Civil, Structural and Architectural) disciplines and the building services personnel. The learner will develop the necessary skill sets to formulate the range of options best suited to the building's use in accordance with the clients requirements and critique the commercial implications involved in the design development.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Assess and evaluate basic mechanical building services technology including; utility services, main plant, boiler plant, flues, fuel storage, control systems, drainage and refuse disposal, hot and cold-water services, ventilation and air conditioning, space heating, fire suppression, etc. + associated builder’s, pipework, ductwork and insulation.
Formulate and assess the commercial issues involved with mechanical and electrical design development.
Evaluate and discuss that which is identified as builder’s work and assess the extent to which it is required.
Explain the significance and importance of Building Management Systems.
Evaluate how to procure specified Mechanical Building Services components and Mechanical Subcontract work packages.
Teaching and Learning Strategies
This module will be delivered using blended learning techniques. This will include online lectures (via adobe connect or similar), and guest lectures augmented by independent learning and directed learning. This approach addresses student learning needs. Moodle will be used to upload educational material (i.e. presentations and recordings of online lectures plus supplementary reading material) and as a means of assessment (e.g. quizzes, uploading assignments and journals). This blended approach brings students together to facilitate group learning.

Indicative Syllabus
This module will;
- Evaluate mechanical building services technology in various installations scenarios (utility services, boiler plant, flues, fuel storage, control systems, drainage and refuse disposal, hot and cold water services, ventilation and air conditioning, space heating, fire suppression, etc. + associated builder’s work) to take account of mains supply, plant, equipment, pipework, ductwork, insulation as appropriate to complete a variety of efficient functioning building types.
- Assess the importance of modern Building Management Systems.
- Evaluate the appropriate procurement of mechanical components and Subcontract work packages

Required & Recommended Book List
2000 Building Services Engineering Taylor & Francis
ISBN 0419257306 ISBN-13 9780419257301
Engineering services within buildings can account for up to forty per cent of the original cost. The energy-using systems that service the building are a significant expense for the building owner in terms of the installed cost, the energy consumed during the forty years, or more, and in the maintenance, repair and upgrading of the systems and plant. This book provides study material in the construction, architectural, surveying and energy engineering subject areas ; it is also suitable for distance learning.

Written specifically for students studying for the BTEC Standard Unit in Building Services and Equipment, the text also covers closely the requirements of the TEC syllabus. The text covers selected worked examples, the principles of services design and related questions and answers.
1997 Building Services, Technology and Design Routledge
ISBN 0582279410 ISBN-13 9780582279414
One in a series of textbooks produced in association with the CIOB, this is a concise guide to the installation and design of principal services in domestic and commercial buildings.
1994 Building Services and Equipment Routledge
ISBN 0582236525 ISBN-13 9780582236523
Services and equipment in complex modern buildings account for over one-third of the total cost. Therefore study of services and equipment is essential for technicians in construction, surveying and architecture. Building Services and Equipment Volume 1 is the first book in a widely acclaimed trilogy that has become established as the leading work in this field. This volume deals with the topics of fuel conservation and thermal comfort by use of integrated heating, ventilating, air conditioning and lighting systems, district heating, thermal insulation, heat pumps and thermostatic controls.
2017-05-26 The Illustrated Guide to Mechanical Building Services
ISBN 0860227588 ISBN-13 9780860227588
This publication is an update to BG 31/2012 and as with the previous edition provides basic reference information on mechanical building services systems for construction clients and professionals in other areas of the construction industry.This guide covers the key areas of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and controls and since the previous edition of this guide, information has been added on:pumpspipeworkvalvesheat networksgas systemsductworkair handling unitscommissioningFor construction clients, the guide provides a simple insight into the main system options discussed during the briefing process. It can also help clients to identify and raise technical questions which they feel are relevant to their organisation's specific needs. For construction professionals, the guide provides a quick reference to building services systems.To ensure the guide is simple and quick to use, a brief overview of each system is provided, followed by a list of key points. Photographs and simple drawings are used to help explain the appearance and operation of each system.
