Description

Electrical Building Services Technology will enable learners to formulate critical opinions of electrical building services technology and building systems utilised in the Built Environment.  It will enable learners to evaluate and assess the requisite electrical services elements, systems and components which combine to complete a variety of efficient functioning building types. This will require learners to assess and evaluate the relationships between the CSA (Civil, Structural and Architectural) disciplines and the building services personnel.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Appraise and evaluate basic electrical services technology including; generating  and standby plant, switchgear, power distribution options, lighting and general services, protective services, transport, communications, lightning protection and mechanical wiring as required to complete an efficient functioning building in accordance with the clients requirements.

2.

Formulate and assess the commercial issues involved with electrical design development.

3.

Appraise and discuss that which is identified as builder’s work and predict the extent to which it is required.

4.

Explain and discuss the significance and importance of Building Management Systems.

5.

Evaluate how to procure specified Electrical Building Services components and Electrical Subcontract work packages.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered using blended learning techniques. This will include online lectures (via adobe connect or similar), and guest lectures augmented by independent learning and directed learning. This approach addresses student learning needs. Moodle will be used to upload educational material (i.e. presentations and recordings of online lectures plus supplementary reading material) and as a means of assessment (e.g. quizzes, uploading assignments and journals). This blended approach brings students together to facilitate group learning.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will;

  • Evaluate and formulate electrical services technology appropriate to various installations scenarios (generating and stand by plant, switchgear, power distribution, lighting and general services, protective services (fire detection, intruder alarm, access control, etc.) transport, communications, lightning protection, mechanical wiring, etc. + associated builder’s work) to take account of mains supply, equipment, control gear, cables, cable containment and final sub-circuits as appropriate to complete a variety of efficient functioning building types.
  • Assess the significance of modern BMS systems.
  • Analyse the appropriate procurement of Electrical Building Services components and Sub-Contractors.

Services and equipment in complex modern buildings account for over one-third of the total cost. Therefore study of services and equipment is essential for technicians in construction, surveying and architecture. Building Services and Equipment Volume 1 is the first book in a widely acclaimed trilogy that has become established as the leading work in this field. This volume deals with the topics of fuel conservation and thermal comfort by use of integrated heating, ventilating, air conditioning and lighting systems, district heating, thermal insulation, heat pumps and thermostatic controls.

Engineering services within buildings can account for up to forty per cent of the original cost. The energy-using systems that service the building are a significant expense for the building owner in terms of the installed cost, the energy consumed during the forty years, or more, and in the maintenance, repair and upgrading of the systems and plant. This book provides study material in the construction, architectural, surveying and energy engineering subject areas ; it is also suitable for distance learning.
