Description

This module is designed to introduce the students to the Higher Education environment.  Specifically, students will identify, explore and evaluate their own learning, researching, reading, writing, presentation skills and in doing so identify areas for improvement. This module will provide the opportunity for students to develop their academic learning strategies; strengthen their academic writing and reading approaches; demonstrate their analytical and critical thinking styles; and evaluate the reliability of various sources of knowledge.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Develop the skills required to write an academic report.

2.

Identify critical thinking skills and use them to analysis various texts.

3.

Evaluate the reliability and effectiveness of various sources of knowledge.

4.

Demonstrate the ability to collect, organise and format references when carrying out research.

5.

Explain the process of academic writing in Higher Education.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered through lectures and tutorials.

Moodle is used by lecturers to direct and manage the learning process and facilitates: Formal Learning: posting of lecture notes and continuous assessments, additional resources and supporting documents. Links to websites. remote collaboration on group work (discussion boards, collaborative document editing) Informal Learning: social communication between learners (discussion boards, chat rooms, Wikis, blogs) learner journals (reflective journals, e-portfolios).

1. Academic Writing Process:

  • Approaches to writing,
  • Academic writing style - strengthening formal expression,
  • Structuring academic writing - clarity, consistency and cohesion,
  • Drafting and formatting ideas - paraphrasing, plagiarism.
  • Managing the process,
  • Citing and Referencing Conventions,
  • Drafting content in Microsoft Word.

2. Report Writing:

  • Significance of reports,
  • Characteristics and definitions,
  • Types of Reports,
  • Structure of Reports.

3. Critical Thinking

  • The value of critical thinking,
  • Personal strategies and barriers to critical thinking,
  • Evaluating a point of view,
  • Supporting arguments and conclusions,
  • Expressing and supporting personal opinion.

4. Source of Knowledge

  • Accessing the range of sources - written: journals, electronic media, newspapers.
  • Evidence - reliability and validity,
  • Textual bias.
