Description

This module explores the role of metrology in modern manufacturing and the management and control of measurement systems. It covers all aspects of measurement management from interpretation of specifications, determination of metrological and calibration requirements to evaluation and ongoing calibration and maintenance.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Specify suitable measurement instruments and standards.

2.

Describe the International System of Units (SI) and the seven base units

3.

Identify the essential components of metrology traceability

4.

Recognise various national and international organisations from which we get many metrology references, resources and standards

5.

Describe and define measurement assurance philosophy

6.

Explain the concepts of measurement and metrology

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Teaching and learning strategies will use a combination of the following:

  • Online lecture and online resources

  • The students' own industrial experience.

  • Work related problem based assignments.

  • Workshop activities.

Module Assessment Strategies

  • The module will be assessed by Examination and Continuous Assessment.  Continuous assessment will comprise multiple choice quizzes, problem based assignments and workshop based assessment.

Repeat Assessments

Repeat assignments will be given
