Description

This module explores the role of metrology in modern manufacturing and the management and control of measurement systems. It covers all aspects of measurement management from interpretation of specifications, determination of metrological and calibration requirements to instrument/measurement process selection, evaluation and ongoing calibration and maintenance.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Specify suitable measurement instruments and standards.

2.

Determine an inspection schedule based on process dominance criteria.

3.

Critically evaluate product and process requirements and translate them into metrological

requirements.

4.

Develop appropriate test and calibration methods.

5.

Develop, install, manage and maintain an appropriate measurement management system appropriate to a company's metrological and regulatory needs.

6.

Quantify the expected level of measurement uncertainty in a given situation.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Teaching and learning strategies will use a combination of the following:

  • Online lecture and online resources
  • The students' own industrial experience.

  • Work related problem based assignments.

  • Workshop activities.

Module Assessment Strategies

  • The module will be assessed by Examination and Continuous Assessment.  Continuous assessment will comprise multiple choice quizzes, problem based assignments and workshop based assessment.

Repeat Assessments

Repeat assignments will be given
