TEACHING AND LEARNING METHODS 

The module will use blended learning. 

Lectures and workshops will provide information and facilitate discussion on the module topic.  

Practical classes will provide experiential learning, wherein students will have opportunities to practice skills/techniques within the role of patient/client/therapist: These will include practical classes that will introduce basic, moving and handling techniques, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and hand washing techniques. Students will be expected to practise the skills learned in class and develop confidence in applying these skills. 

The teaching and learning methods adopted will involve engagement and active learning by students. The principal methods will be workshop discussions, individual & group practical tasks, peer learning, discussions and reflective exercises that will provide opportunities for students to develop appropriate information handling, practical and professional skills. 

The students will be expected to engage in online activities and to make use of supporting materials and exercises.  While learning materials will be available via the University eLearning environment, students will also be expected to make effective use of external websites, as well as prior and current learning experience.   

Students will be directed to read texts recommended in the required reading list, in addition to relevant core texts, journal articles and web-based material. 

Students will be encouraged to access and complete all relevant Department of Health / HSE online resources as directed. This will enhance professional and personal development related to practice as a health care professional. 

This module is a pre-requisite to progression into semester 2 and placement 1. 

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation training (approx. 7-8 hours) and moving/manual handling training (approx. 4 hours) should be certified by relevant external bodies whilst being built into the course practicals.  Ratios for BLS training are 1:6 students at the time of writing. 

Assessment is 100% continuous assessment. 

Students will undertake practical skills examination(s) during which they will be required to perform a selection of key skills acquired throughout the module using a ‘case scenario’ approach. These assessments are assessed on a pass/fail basis.  Each practical skills assessment must be passed in order for the module to be passed overall. 

Online quizzes, short assessments may be used to assess relevant theoretical content. 

Simulated patient consultation(s) with peer(s) will be used to assess students interpersonal and communication skills, professional skills & etiquette and indicate fitness to practice. 

Feedback both through online and verbal communications will be given formatively throughout the module emphasised in practical classes. Students will be given verbal and practical advice on application of skills.  

Timely assignment feedback will also be available in written format and students will be given the opportunity to discuss their feedback on submissions. 

Students must meet the learning outcomes and ‘Pass’ this module before progressing to the Semester 2 hospital-based placements.  Students will be afforded the opportunity to repeat all/any element Failed at the first available opportunity.

Where the attendance at practicals is below 75%, students will be expected to offset the deficit before being regarded as having successfully completed the module.
