Description

This module aims to facilitate learners to develop knowledge and skills for professional practice and continued personal development emphasising understanding of key concepts in health communication and health psychology.  Student will develop good practice for managing the interactions and situations that arise in healthcare aswell as gaining insight into how their own behaviours and values impact on their professional practice.  Learners will also hone skills in medical history taking, diagnostic reporting and research methodology, while gaining an appreciation of the wider implications for and of the work of clinical measurement physiology.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

Relate experience to theoretical concepts in communication psychology 

2.

Apply principles of accurate medical history taking and diagnostic reporting within an area of clinical measurement science and changes to therapy as would fall under the practitioner’s scope of practice.

Integrate research skills including advanced literature searching, critical appraisal, literature synthesis and data analysis

4.

Reflect critically on learning experiences and career planning & development, identifying more and less effective learning strategies, demonstrating an appreciation for the wider implications for and of the work of clinical measurement physiologists.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Online lectures will offer learners opportunities to engage with key theoretical concepts. 

Online workshops will actively engage students in discussion on relevant topics and offer opportunities to apply professional skills to interpersonal interactions with reflective exercises as follow-up. 

Students will be expected to actively engage with a range of online resources, online activities, formative assessment opportunities and recommended reading both in a self-directed capacity and as directed by tutors to support learning.  While learning and support materials will be made available through the university eLearning platform, students will also be expected to make effective use of external websites and prior and current experience. 

 The module is a prerequisite for the final ‘major’ practice placement (placement 4). 

Module Assessment Strategies

The pass mark for this module will be 50%.

Assessment is 100% continuous assessment. 

Summative assessment of learning outcomes will take a variety of submission formats.  The clinical case study could be submitted as a scientific poster, an oral or video presentation, or case study write up, in line with UDL.  The Competency based application form and professional development plan will assess students readiness for entering the workforce.  There will be use of formats such as ePortfolios or online reflective learning logs.

Reflective journals and online theory assessment will be centred around particular events within the module e.g. guest lecture, simulation.  This will require some flexibility in terms of week of assessment, however assessments will be staggered to distribute assessment workload evenly for students

Formative feedback will form part of the learning methods in workshops and feedback will be available to students on summative assessment grades in writing. 

Repeat Assessments

Students will be afforded the opportunity to undertake any/all Failed elements of the module at the earliest opportunity. 

Indicative Syllabus

Indicative Content 

Patient Centred Care (2-3 weeks)

  • Relevant theoretical concepts in communication and health psychology 

  • Effective communications skills (questioning, listening, explaining, making decisions) in healthcare context 

  • Interpersonal skills: Building therapeutic relationships and establishing trust and rapport with patients, empathy, compassion, addressing feelings and mutual respect 

  • Professional considerations in communication; confidentiality, privacy, professional boundaries 

  • Recognise and respond appropriately to stress in service users, other professionals and self 

  • The experience of loss in health & illness 

  • Establish and maintain collaborative working practices 

  • Reflect on how personal characteristics, values and abilities impact on effective professional practice 

Professional Development (2 weeks)

  • Identify individual knowledge, skills and attributes that will be valuable during recruitment and selection 

  • Preparing a HSE competence-based application form 

  • Interview skills & interview technique 

  • CPD post qualification - CPD portfolio – professional registration 

  • HSE-Land Virtual Platform - identified self-directed training courses

  • Implications of & for the field of practice in the wider context, and consideration of relevant policy contexts

Professional Knowledge & Skills  (3 weeks)

  • Correct patient Identification 

  • Medical Hx taking – demonstrate ability to take an accurate medical history demonstrating appropriate follow-up 

  • Diagnostic report writing - Identify and summarize normal reports within an area of clinical measurement science accurately with correct medical terminology and appropriate level of professionalism 

  • Critical decision making in recommending the appropriate test and changes to therapy within practitioners scope of practice 

  • Presentation skills 

  • Develop skills of reflective learning with a focus on diagnostic professions 

  • Disinfection/Sterilisation – Processing reusable medical devices   

Research Methods (4 weeks)

  • Advanced literature searching 

  • Interpretation and critical appraisal of scientific and clinical literature 

  • Study design 

  • Data handling and analysis - Introduction to Statistics
