PSYG07007 2023 Advanced Clinical Measurement Applications
This module builds on the concepts and knowledge obtained in the earlier module on Clinical Measure Instrumentation. Learners will be introduced to advanced techniques employed with medical instrumentations in the measurement of physiological signals in clinical measurement disciplines (Vascular, Neurological, Gastrointestinal, Respiratory and Cardiac physiology).
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Review advanced physics principles related to clinical measurement instrumentation
Assess key advanced clinical measurement approaches
Appraise the clinical presentations that require advanced instrument techniques
Differentiate the diagnostics information that can be obtained using multiple clinical measurement instruments
Evaluate other techniques and emerging techniques for clinical measurement, including safety implications
Analyse and understand the role of quality assurance testing and governance within Clinical Measurement Physiology disciplines
Teaching and Learning Strategies
Lectures will expose learners to key concepts supported by laboratory-based practicals. Practical work will offer opportunities for interactive learning in small groups through enquiry and discussion. Laboratory technique and report‑writing ability are assessed as part of the practical work performed during the module. Practicals are designed as problem based learning exercises to encourage teamwork and critical thinking.
The VLE will support the module as a repository for learning material but also providing opportunities for self-directed learning through the provision of short formative assessment quizzes and activities including case study work. Module materials embrace the principles of a Universal Design for Learning approach.
Students will be expected to actively engage with reading material and self-directed learning activities to promote integration of prior knowledge and assimilation of new specialist knowledge.
As this module will contain elements of mathematics within the physical principles, students will be able to obtain additional support, if required, through the Maths support centre within the Centre for enhancement of Teaching and Learning (CELT).
Module Assessment Strategies
This module contains 'must pass' assessments. The minimum ‘pass’ mark for this module overall is 50%, in addition to meeting the minimum attendance requirement.
Students will complete laboratory practicals and generate reports as a key part of ongoing assessment to apply theory to practical application and understanding. Written feedback will be provided at regular intervals as a result of this process.
Short answer and multiple-choice quizzes will also be used to assess theoretical knowledge.
Application of theoretical knowledge will also be assessed via final written exam.
Formative feedback will form an important part of the learning methods within this module. Due to the required knowledge and competences fo this module feedback will be available to students on summative assessment grades in writing.
Repeat Assessments
Students will be afforded the opportunity to undertake any/all Failed elements of the module at the earliest opportunity. Where the attendance of practicals is below 75%, students will be expected to offset the deficit before being regarded as having successfully completed the module.
This module contains 'must pass' assessments. The minimum ‘pass’ mark for this module overall is 50%, in addition to meeting the minimum attendance requirement.
Module Dependencies

2020-06-16 Medical Instrumentation John Wiley & Sons
ISBN 9781119457336 ISBN-13 1119457335
Provides a comprehensive overview of the basic concepts behind the application and designs of medical instrumentation This premiere reference on medical instrumentation describes the principles, applications, and design of the medical instrumentation most commonly used in hospitals. It places great emphasis on design principles so that scientists with limited background in electronics can gain enough information to design instruments that may not be commercially available. The revised edition includes new material on microcontroller-based medical instrumentation with relevant code, device design with circuit simulations and implementations, dry electrodes for electrocardiography, sleep apnea monitor, Infusion pump system, medical imaging techniques and electrical safety. Each chapter includes new problems and updated reference material that covers the latest medical technologies. Medical Instrumentation: Application and Design, Fifth Edition covers general concepts that are applicable to all instrumentation systems, including the static and dynamic characteristics of a system, the engineering design process, the commercial development and regulatory classifications, and the electrical safety, protection, codes and standards for medical devices. The readers learn about the principles behind various sensor mechanisms, the necessary amplifier and filter designs for analog signal processing, and the digital data acquisition, processing, storage and display using microcontrollers. The measurements of both cardiovascular dynamics and respiratory dynamics are discussed, as is the developing field of biosensors. The book also covers general concepts of clinical laboratory instrumentation, medical imaging, various therapeutic and prosthetic devices, and more. Emphasizes design throughout so scientists and engineers can create medical instruments Updates the coverage of modern sensor signal processing New material added to the chapter on modern microcontroller use Features revised chapters, descriptions, and references throughout Includes many new worked out examples and supports student problem-solving Offers updated, new, and expanded materials on a companion webpage Supplemented with a solutions manual containing complete solutions to all problems Medical Instrumentation: Application and Design, Fifth Edition is an excellent book for a senior to graduate-level course in biomedical engineering and will benefit other health professionals involved with the topic.
2014-12-11 The Physiological Measurement Handbook CRC Press
ISBN 9781439808481 ISBN-13 1439808481
The Physiological Measurement Handbook presents an extensive range of topics that encompass the subject of measurement in all departments of medicine. The handbook describes the use of instruments and techniques for practical measurements required in medicine. It covers sensors, techniques, hardware, and software as well as information on processing systems, automatic data acquisition, reduction and analysis, and their incorporation for diagnosis. Suitable for both instrumentation designers and users, the handbook enables biomedical engineers, scientists, researchers, students, health care personnel, and those in the medical device industry to explore the different methods available for measuring a particular physiological variable. It helps readers select the most suitable method by comparing alternative methods and their advantages and disadvantages. In addition, the book provides equations for readers focused on discovering applications and solving diagnostic problems arising in medical fields not necessarily in their specialty. It also includes specialized information needed by readers who want to learn advanced applications of the subject, evaluative opinions, and possible areas for future study.
