Description

This module will give students an introduction to investigations in the Respiratory and Cardiac disciplines of Clinical Measurement Physiology
Basic Principles underpinning investigation, indications and applications of tests, equipment set up, contraindications and limitations of tests will be covered
Introduction to more advanced techniques and their clinical application

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Recognise and outline indications, contraindications, and limitations for testing

2.

Demonstrate an understanding of equipment and techniques appropriate to investigating conditions

3.

Demonstrate operational techniques for the use of basic equipment, and the underpinning principles, in Clinical Measurement Physiology investigations and procedures

4.

Identify advanced procedures in the evaluation of a patient's condition and their potential use

5.

Classify normal results in basic Clinical Measurement Physiology investigations

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Lectures will introduce learners to key concepts which will be supported by laboratory-based practicals. Practical work will offer opportunities for interactive learning in small groups through enquiry and discussion.

The VLE will support the module as a repository for learning material but also providing opportunities for self-directed learning through the provision of short formative assessment quizzes and activities including case study work.

Students will be expected to actively engage with reading material and self-directed learning activities to promote integration of knowledge gained in other modules

Module Assessment Strategies

The minimum ‘pass’ mark for this module overall is 40%.

Assessment will include a final exam

Students will assessed with short quizzes during laboratory practicals which will be used to assess relevant theoretical content.  The module will also use a written assignment

Practical assessment is centred around competent use of and understanding of clinical equipment.  This will require some flexibility in terms of week of assessment, however assessments will be carried out in labs to distribute assessment workload evenly for students

Timely assessment feedback will also be available in written format and students will be given the opportunity to discuss their feedback on submissions.

Repeat Assessments

Students will be afforded the opportunity to undertake any/all failed elements of the module at the earliest opportunity. Where the attendance of practicals is below 75%, students will be expected to offset the deficit before being regarded as having successfully completed the module.

Indicative Syllabus

1.Identify and describe indications, contraindications, and limitations for testing

  • Introduction to Clinical Measurement Physiology Investigations in Cardiac and Respiratory, including relevant disease presentations.  Overview of potential contraindications for particular investigations and the common limitations of these investigations.

2.Describe the equipment and techniques used in clinical measurement physiology to appropriately investigate clinical conditions

Cardiac Physiology

  • ECG, Ambulatory monitoring – description of various types of equipment and techniques that can be used to perform these investigations.  Disease specific indications as well as contraindications and limitations specific to the different techniques or types of equipment.

Respiratory Physiology

  • Basic lung function assessments - Spirometry, lung volumes, Diffusing capacity, Bronchodilator response - description of various equipment used and the techniques that can be used to perform these investigations. Disease specific indications as well as contraindications and limitations specific to the different techniques or types of equipment.

3.Demonstrate operational techniques for the use of basic equipment in Clinical Measurement Physiology investigations and procedures.

Cardiac Physiology

  • ECG, Ambulatory monitoring – how to set up equipment, room and patient.  Demonstrate how to use the equipment, provide examples of indications including possible patient presentations, limitations in practice and further discuss contraindications.

Respiratory Physiology

  • Basic lung function assessments - Spirometry, lung volumes, Diffusing capacity, Bronchodilator response - Demonstrate how to use the equipment, provide examples of indications including possible patient presentations, limitations in practice and further discuss contraindications.

4.Identify advanced procedures in the evaluation of a patient's condition and their potential use

  • Introduction to more advanced techniques for the two disciplines and their clinical application and why they might be more suitable to assess a particular condition or overcome a contraindication or limitation.  Outline normal and abnormal responses to exercise and how this might be applied clinically.  Give examples for Cardiac and Respiratory.

5.Classify normal results in basic Clinical Measurement Physiology investigations

  • Normal/expected and abnormal results. Discuss normal parameters for investigations as outlines above for both Cardiac and Respiratory.  Outline abnormal parameters which are indicative of pathology or limitations of the investigation.

Echocardiography is one of the most useful and powerful diagnostic tools in the assessment of cardiac function. It remains a rapidly expanding modality, with new techniques constantly developing and maturing. Building on the success of the original work, the second edition of Making Sense of Echocardiography: A Hands-on Guide provides a timely, accessible overview for those learning echocardiography for the first time as well as an accessible handbook that experienced sonographers can refer to throughout their careers. The strong clinical focus and concentration on real-life scenarios make this book especially relevant in day-to-day practice. New chapters in this edition discuss myocardial mechanics and speckle tracking and 3D echo. The book also contains significantly expanded and updated material on: Contrast echocardiography Tissue Doppler imaging Intravascular ultrasound and epicardial echocardiography The left ventricle and its systolic function Left ventricular diastolic function The left atrium Supplying the latest guidelines and evidence-based clinical advice, this edition is also supplemented with new illustrations and an updated website. Fully updated key references for further reading are provided for each chapter. This accessible yet comprehensive text will ensure readers are up to date on the essentials in the field and can confidently integrate new procedures into their everyday practice.

The Physiological Measurement Handbook presents an extensive range of topics that encompass the subject of measurement in all departments of medicine. The handbook describes the use of instruments and techniques for practical measurements required in medicine. It covers sensors, techniques, hardware, and software as well as information on processing systems, automatic data acquisition, reduction and analysis, and their incorporation for diagnosis. Suitable for both instrumentation designers and users, the handbook enables biomedical engineers, scientists, researchers, students, health care personnel, and those in the medical device industry to explore the different methods available for measuring a particular physiological variable. It helps readers select the most suitable method by comparing alternative methods and their advantages and disadvantages. In addition, the book provides equations for readers focused on discovering applications and solving diagnostic problems arising in medical fields not necessarily in their specialty. It also includes specialized information needed by readers who want to learn advanced applications of the subject, evaluative opinions, and possible areas for future study.
