Description

This module aims to introduce the five disciplines within Clinical Measurement Physiology (Vascular, Neurological, Gastrointestinal, Respiratory and Cardiac physiology), including the equipment used and typical Health IT infrastructure related to the role.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Explain the commonalities and differences between the five disciplines of Clinical Measurement Physiology

2.

Describe the typical equipment used within Clinical Measurement Physiology

3.

Identify typical patient administration systems, health IT systems and their application within Clinical Measurement Departments

4.

Recognise the role of other diagnostics areas such as radiology and their place within the wider diagnostic pathway

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Lectures/workshops will provide information and facilitate discussion on the module topics.

The teaching and learning methods adopted will involve engagement and will encourage active self-directed learning by students. The principal methods will be lectures, group discussions around students understanding, group and individual tasks, peer learning, discussions and reflective exercises that will provide opportunities for students to develop appropriate information handling skills.

The students will be directed to learning material via the University e-Learning platform but also to external resources.

Students will be directed to read texts recommended in the required reading list

Guest lectures – from experienced practising clinical professionals / experts in each of the 5 disciplines and / or the professional body (IICMS) to encourage students to think widely about the various disciplines and the profession

Module Assessment Strategies

This module will have a minimum pass mark of 40%.

Assessment will include a final exam

Online quizzes, short assessments will be used to assess relevant theoretical content as well as a written assignment

Timely assessment feedback will also be available in written format and students will be given the opportunity to discuss their feedback on submissions.

Repeat Assessments

Students will be afforded the opportunity to repeat all/any element Failed at the first available opportunity.

ISBN 9781439808481 ISBN-13 1439808481

The Physiological Measurement Handbook presents an extensive range of topics that encompass the subject of measurement in all departments of medicine. The handbook describes the use of instruments and techniques for practical measurements required in medicine. It covers sensors, techniques, hardware, and software as well as information on processing systems, automatic data acquisition, reduction and analysis, and their incorporation for diagnosis. Suitable for both instrumentation designers and users, the handbook enables biomedical engineers, scientists, researchers, students, health care personnel, and those in the medical device industry to explore the different methods available for measuring a particular physiological variable. It helps readers select the most suitable method by comparing alternative methods and their advantages and disadvantages. In addition, the book provides equations for readers focused on discovering applications and solving diagnostic problems arising in medical fields not necessarily in their specialty. It also includes specialized information needed by readers who want to learn advanced applications of the subject, evaluative opinions, and possible areas for future study.
