Description

The aim of this module is to introduce the student to human anatomy and physiology to gain familiarity with the structures relevant to human function and an understanding for the mechanisms behind it. This comprehensive overview will be applicable to a broad base of health studies for data analytic applications. This course will link with other related modules including biology, pharmacology, and human disease.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Locate and list the morphological characteristics of key cell and tissues types in humans.

2.

Identify the fundamental anatomical components of human bodily systems.

3.

Explain the functional role of cell and tissues types studied and how their form fits their function from cell to system.

4.

Describe the basic functions of the systems studied with an understanding of homeostatic control.

5.

Demonstrate an ability to work independently with strong self-direction in relation to time-management, motivation and planning in workshop participation.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will include a mixture of lectures, ‘in lab’ video demonstrations, tutorial workshops and video simulations augmented by independent learning and directed learning. This mixed strategy of engagement is intended to support various student learner needs. Moodle will be used as a repository of educational resources and as a means of assessment (e.g. quizzes).

Module Assessment Strategies

This module will be 50% continuous assessment and 50% final exam. A mix of assessment methods will be applied to evaluate a variety of learning styles.

The workshop component (30%) is assessed by a mix of weekly on-going write-ups and short answer questions that are in the workshop workbook.

In the second half of the semester there will be 2 MCQ style quiz (10% x2).

The final exam (50%) will take place at the end of the semester.

Repeat Assessments

Repeat continuous assessment and / or final exam.

Students are required to complete a minimum of 75% of workshops. Students will be asked to repeat complete if they fail to meet this minimum requirement.

Indicative Syllabus

Theory:

Morphology and function of fundamental human cells, tissues and organ systems.

Comprehensive key details of the following: cardiovascular, respiratory, circulatory, immune, excretory, nervous, muscular, endocrine, digestive and skeletal systems.

Workshops:

Cytology (video / simulations) including - different blood component, immune cells.

Histology including - muscle tissue (cardiac, smooth and skeletal), epithelium, connective tissue, nervous tissue.
