Description

This module will enable the learner to study how the body responds to the acute and chronic stress of exercise or physical activity. It will discuss the various concepts associated with bioenergetics and muscle metabolism, energy expenditure and fatigue and the structure and function of exercising muscle. This module will also give the learner the opportunity to conduct relevant physiological field and lab based tests.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Demonstrate and utilise knowledge of the principle energy systems and sources and the interrelationship between systems at rest and during exercise.

2.

Measure and interpret the capacity of the energy systems and energy expenditure at rest and during exercise..

3.

Conduct tests to demonstrate the physiological principles affecting force production.

4.

Examine the structure and function of skeletal muscle and force production.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered full-time. This will include lectures, laboratory practicals and will be augmented by independent learning and directed learning. This approach is expected to address student learning needs. Moodle will be used as a repository of educational resources and as a means of assessment (e.g.quizzes, uploading assignments.)

Module Assessment Strategies

This module is 65% Continuous Assessment and 35% Final Exam.

This module will be assessed using a combination of end of semester final exam (35%), continuous assessment and coursework (65%).

The continuous assessment and coursework will involve two reports where students interpret the physiological data collected during practical laboratories. They will present their data and address the discussion questions in an exercise physiology context.

There will be 2 MCQ's given during the semester, mid-way and towards the end of the semester.

The student must reach an assigned gate (30) in the final exam and achieve 40% overall to pass the subject.

Repeat Assessments

Repeat Continuous Assessment and/or Final Exam.

2017-02-03 ACSM's Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription LWW
ISBN 1496339061 ISBN-13 9781496339065

ACSM's Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription is the flagship title from the American College of Sports Medicine, the prestigious organization that sets the standards for the exercise profession. This critical handbook delivers scientifically based standards on exercise testing and prescription to the certification candidate, the professional, and the student. This manual gives succinct summaries of recommended procedures for exercise testing and exercise prescription in healthy and diseased patients The tenth edition reflects some crucial and exciting changes, making the content necessary for effective study and practice. New pre-exercise health screening recommendations are critical to helping more of the population begin a safe, healthy physical activity program without consulting a physician. New and expanded information on the risks of sedentary behavior, clinical exercise testing and interpretation, high intensity interval training, musculoskeletal injury risk, fitness testing protocols and norms, and an expansion of the principles of health behavior change are included. Additionally, significant reorganization of content will help you reach the information you need quickly. This manual is an essential resource for all exercise professionals, as well as other health professionals who may council patients on exercise including physicians, nurses, physician's assistants, physical and occupational therapists, dieticians, and health care administrators.
