Description

This course introduces students to mental health difficulties associated with children and adolescents.  It explores factors that contribute to these difficulties (Genetic, developmental, family, social, educational, personality, environmental, etc).  Assessment, classification, and treatment are critically examined.

The module is assessed by a 40% presentation (done either individually or in groups at the student's discretion) and an end of semester examination worth 60%

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Describe a range of models that help in the understanding of childhood mental health difficulties (Domain 5.1, 5.4, 5.7, 5.10).

2.

Discuss the various factors that contribute to the development of childhood mental health difficulties (Domain 5.1, 5.4, 5.7, 5.10).

3.

Critically discuss classification, treatment/interventions and trajectory of childhood mental health difficulties (Domain 2.1, 2.9, 2.17, 3.1, 3.3, 3.6, 5.1, 5.4, 5.7, 5.10).

4.

Demonstrate a thorough understanding of childhood mental issues in the context of normal or expected development through class discussion and examination (Domain 2.17, 3.1, 3.6, 5.1, 5.4, 5.7, 5.10)

5.

To critically examine the services available for the treatment of childhood mental health difficulties, access to these services, treatments/interventions available and efficacy of same (Domain 1.5, 3.1,3.3, 3.6, 5.1)

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Each student will receive three hours of contact per week.  This will be composed of one hour lecture and two-hour tutorial/workshop

During tutorials, students will have an opportunity to debate concepts and to contribute to a discussion from their own reading.  Reading will be assigned and will also be encouraged.

In the second half of the semester, the students will engage in peer learning when they participate in each other's presentation through question and answer sessions.

The students will also be required to study for an end of semester examination

Module Assessment Strategies

The students will give a presentation (either individually or in a group of their own choice).  The presentation is worth 40% and they will also do a written end of semester examination worth 60%

Repeat Assessments

Repeat presentation if required last week of the semester.

Repeat examination if required at the second sitting.

Predisposing, precipitating, modulating and maintaining variables that influence the development of mental health difficulties. (family history, bullying, abuse, trauma, personality)

Symptoms of childhood disorders, assessment techniques and treatment/interventions available

Preventative strategies (school, family, social, etc)

Services available - private, public, voluntary, peer, etc
