Description
In this module students will gain a deepened awareness of the developing child from 6-12 (middle childhood). In addition they will study developmental disorders and the most common psychological problems encountered in childhood. The personal, contextual, maintaining and protective factors implicated in these conditions will be explored. Students will gain an understanding of the evidence based range of interventions used in the treatment of childhood disorders. The module also looks at the impact of life stressors on the young. As child observations are crucial professional tools for those working in this area the module will seek to further develop and enhance this skill set for the student.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
1.
Explain typical development in middle childhood (6-12).
2.
Examine atypical development in this age group.
3.
Investigate problems of childhood including illness, separation and loss, bullying and neglect.
4.
Use psychological approaches to manage difficult behaviours in childhood
5.
Select appropriate child observation techniques to produce a study of a child.
Teaching and Learning Strategies
2 hour lecture and 1 hour tutorial.

Bullying: defining the problem, types of bullying, signs and symptoms, characteristics in bullying behaviour.
Observation Studies: Ethical observation methods and assessments.
