Description

This module addresses elementary professional and ethical issues related to the use of introductory counselling skills in helping roles, for example, the impacts of technology, diversity, or multiculturalism on counselling. This will take place within a broader exploration of best practice in the counselling profession within which the learner will examine the limitations and responsibilities of the novice helper. The learner will have the opportunity to consider their suitability for a career in counselling and to identify possible further learning and/or career paths.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Demonstrate knowledge of the application of the basic philosophical concepts underpinning ethics to helping work.

2.

Recognise ethical contexts and situations which are governed by codes of ethics and legislative requirements pertaining to practice.

3.

Engage in appropriate structured reflection in relation to continuous professional development.

4.

Access and comprehend at a foundational level, field specific research literature.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Learners will develop informed critical thinking and ethical awareness through online lectures and on campus tutorials. Other learning activities may include group discussion, guest lectures, directed activities, reading, videos, and case studies. The module will be supported by a dedicated virtual learning environment (VLE), Moodle. Tutorials and group discussions will provide opportunities to scaffold learning and offer peer and lecturer formative feedback. Summative feedback and feed forward will be provided following submission of assessments.

Students are expected to engage in approximately 2 Independent Learning Hours per week.

Module Assessment Strategies

The module continuous assessment tasks provide opportunities to link the professional issues studied to relevant real-world questions and activities. Interactive class exercises and tutorial sessions will scaffold these assignments. Summative feedback and feed forward will be provided following submission of assignments.

Repeat Assessments

Repeat assessment procedures will require student to repeat submit the failed element of the module.
