The Capstone Preparation module is designed to provide the appropriate research skills, knowledge and practical guidance necessary to complete the Capstone Dissertation. The Capstone Preparation module is designed to provide the appropriate research skills, knowledge and practical guidance necessary to complete a Capstone research proposal and ethical application that will guide their Capstone Dissertation.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Generate research questions reflecting a topic of interest related to the insurance industry or business.
Critically review the literature and create a literature review framework.
Demonstrate knowledge of the various research methodologies and research designs to carry out a dissertation project.
Comprehend the role of ethics within the research process.
Construct a research proposal with a related ethics application form.
Teaching and Learning Strategies
Teaching and learning on this module will be via a series of on-line lectures in which Learners will discuss common methods used in research in business and insurance, and critically analyse past literature and research in order to develop an implementable research proposal with associated ethics application form to carry out the Capstone Project. The emphasis will be student participation in analysing common research issues, the choice, presentation, and rationale for research methods, and on mutual support and constructive criticism. These on-line lectures will be organised around the main themes in the indicative syllabus but will be flexible enough to adapt to the learning requirements of individual cohorts. It is anticipated that research projects will be grounded in practice and will be related to the students’ company.

This module will be assessed by a capstone research proposal. The module is 100% Continuous Assessment.

LO 1: Generate research questions reflecting a topic of interest related to the insurance industry or business.
- Research the topic of interest;
- Understand the scope and range of insurance research in the topic area;
- Identify valid research question(s).
LO 2: Critically review the literature and create a literature review framework.
- Formulate a search strategy;
- Identify key words;
- Identify key academic search databases;
- Carry out literature searches;
- Identify and review relevant and up to date literature;
- Understand accurate referencing and plagiarism.
LO 3: Demonstrate knowledge of the various research methodologies and research designs to carry out a dissertation project.
- Critically evaluate the various research designs and approaches within the research process;
- Provide justification of research design choice and approach;
- Select the appropriate sample and sampling technique;
- Investigate instrument tool construction and testing;
- Plan the research process.

- Understand the principles of ethics within the research process;
- Understand how to implement ethical principles within research;
- Apply ethical principles to proposed capstone research project .
LO 5: Construct a research proposal with related ethics application form.
- Prepare a research proposal including topic background, research question(s), hypothesis, literature review, sample and sampling method, design, analysis and ethics;
- Prepare a Research Ethics Application to be submitted to the Research Ethics Committee;
- Prepare a Participant Information Sheet and an Informed Consent Form to be included with the Research Ethics Application.
