Demonstrate the ability to critically review the literature in the area of the research topic

Plan and implement methodologies to collect, collate and analyse relevant data where appropriate

Interpret findings, discuss results with reference to the literature and identify key recommendations as a result of the research conducted

Source, interpret, critically review and apply appropriate and referenced literature from area of investigation

Present, promote and communicate the research project in a variety of forms.

Demonstrate the ability to manage supervisor feedback, timelines and deliverables

Students will be expected to take responsibility for their own learning of their specific research topic under the direction and guidance of their project supervisor.

This will include a weekly contact with your project supervisor.

A Research Guideline Document will be made available as a resource and Moodle will be used as a repository of educational resources and as a means of assessment (uploading your final project copy).  Academic supports for Maths, data analysis and academic writing will be made available throughout the project, including online moodle support pages in each of these areas.

This assessment strategy for this module is designed to focus students on the production of a research paper and a poster/oral presentation of their research findings.

The project is assessed in a number of ways:

Continuous assessment ‑ this is carried out by the project supervisor and relates to the manner in which the student plans, organises and manages their own time and data collection.

Written report ‑ the written report is assessed by the project supervisor and a second academic. This assessment evaluates the students ability to accurately record, interpret, evaluate and draw conclusions from their findings. This also gives the assessors an insight into the students understanding of the research area and the students ability to source literature, evaluate and interpret this literature and to place their own findings in context.

Dissemination ‑ This presentation allows the student to demonstrate their ability to communicate their research findings in poster/oral form.

Where the student fails to achieve the pass mark in the module, they may be asked to  to revise and resubmit the written report.

• Establish a research framework within the allocated time frame.
• Source, review and evaluate relevant literature in relation to the topic being investigated.
• Develop research methodologies and practices. 
• Conduct primary research in a scientific/health setting
• Analyse and interpret data collected using statistical methods.
• Present a research paper of the project to include the relevant sections as laid down in the research guidelines issued by the research co-ordinator within the programme.
• Display, defend and critically appraise the project during an online poster presentation/oral presentation
