Description

This is a Physics module relevant to Occupational Safety and Health.  The principle topics include mechanics, light and sound, nuclear physics and electricity and consist of lab investigations in these areas.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Explain physical laws and definitions of mechanics, light, sound, nuclear physics and electricity.

2.

Select and apply an appropriate mathematical formula to solve a physical problem.

3.

Describe the relevance of Physics to Occupational Safety and Health.

4.

Perform Physics experiments in accordance with supplied instructions.

5.

Report the performance of a Physics experiment by interpreting data, processing results and deducing informed conclusions.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered full-time. This includes lectures, laboratory practicals, and will be augmented by independent learning and directed learning. This approach is expected to address student learning needs. Moodle will be used as a repository of educational resources and as a means of assessment (e.g. quizzes, uploading assignments).

Module Assessment Strategies

Continuous Assessment (65%)

1.For the lab-based assessment: students will perform a weekly lab experiment and compile a report for same. (50%)

2. Moodle quizzes relevant to the most recent covered topic will be opened each week of the semester. (15%)

Final Exam (35%)

Repeat Assessments

Repeat final exam and/or continuous assessment.

Indicative Syllabus

Explain physical laws and definitions of mechanics, light, sound, nuclear physics and electricity.

Intro: scientific notation, SI units

Physics topics relating to the listed areas will be delivered

Select and apply an appropriate mathematical formula to solve a physical problem.

For each physics topic, relevant formulas will be covered along with mathematical rules relevant to formula use: e.g. changing the subject of a formula

Describe the relevance of Physics to Occupational Safety and Health.

Links will be demonstrated between areas of physics and OSH as follows:

Mechanics: Falls from height and impacts from moving objects

Electricity: Electric shock events

Light: Risks associated with electromagnetic radiation

Sound: Risks associated with noise, noise surveying

Nuclear Physics: health effects of ionising radiation and radiation protection

Perform Physics experiments in accordance with supplied instructions.

Several experiments relating to the above areas of topics will be performed

Report the performance of a Physics experiment by interpreting data, processing results and deducing informed conclusions.

Procedures for compiling accurate lab reports will be covered
